9 p.m. update: Reno Police Chief Jason Soto said the Nevada National Guard and federal agencies are responding to help with the rioting in downtown Reno.
"Please go home, avoid arrest, and stay safe," Soto tweeted.
8:40 p.m. update: The Reno Police Department has declared an unlawful assembly in downtown Reno.
The declaration applies to an area bounded by Liberty Stree to Interstate 80 and from Ralston Street to Wells Avenue.
"Residents should stay inside," police said. "Those on the streets are to leave immediately Violators are subject to arrest."
Also, the Regional Transporation Commission said public bus service has been suspended.
The city of Sparks has also issued a curfew until 7 a.m. on Sunday. It asked people to stay off the street.
8:30 p.m. update: Washoe County has joined the city of Reno. Washoe County said it is under curfew until 7 a.m. on Sunday.
Sheriff Darin Balaam asked people to protest peacefully.
"We hear your anger," Balaam said in a statement. "We understand your anger. We stand with our community. And we implore you to not let anger destroy our beautiful home."
8 p.m. update: Police asked protestors to leave the area of city hall. When they did not, the police used tear gas to disperse them.

“Citizens are advised to stay indoors and avoid public gatherings,” Shieve said in a tweet. “Peaceful protest and the right to assembly are sacred. Violence and destruction are not.”
Schieve said the city of Reno will not tolerate excessive use of force.
“Emotions are high and many in our community are in pain,” Schieve tweeted. “We know that justice sometimes doesn’t come as fast as we’d like. But I implore our citizens to channel this energy into the true fight: social justice, equality, and accountability. We love our city and all who live here.”
Original story: Perhaps 1,000 or more people held a Black Lives Matter protest in downtown Reno on Saturday, demanding justice for George Floyd and for an end of police brutality to black people.
The protests ended up at the Reno Police Department by about 4:30 p.m. They put graffiti in the area of the police station and a small fire was set when protestors burned a flag. Protestors, who surrounded the building, changed obscenities about the police.
