...Now just stop peddling that dumb immigration bill and Rand might actually have a chance.

That sample size is meaningless. The immigration bill is key to Rand picking up the the fastest growing voting block.

Why would they back Rand over 1) A Hispanic Republican who speaks their own language and supports the DREAM act 2) A Democrat who gives them welfare?

We should focus on targeting young people and grassroots conservatives, an extension of the original Ron Paul base. There are a lot of paleocons, Tea Partiers and social conservatives that have very strong views on immigration. They will not back Rubio or any other amnesty candidate. They will look for a conservative alternative and that alternative should be Rand Paul.

By the way, why is Cruz on that list? He's not eligible. I expect Rand will be the second choice of the Cruz fans. Rand is probably also the second choice of a lot of the Walker and Palin guys, seeing as Walker and Palin are very unlikely to run.

Yeah and how well did targeting kids and grassroots work out for Ron? Those groups do not vote in numbers sufficient to win elections. You need to reach out and build a big tent.

Well first you can't lump all Hispanics in this country into one homogeneous group because they aren't. You have at least 3 distinct groups. Cubans in Florida who have been here a while and have it easy with the wet foot/dry foot policy. If they make it to US soil they get asylum. Then you have Puerto Ricans. They are citizens but can't vote for president and don't pay income taxes, a lot of them claim residence on the island and work here, no federal income taxes and full entitlements. Last you have Mexicans and other central Americans. They have it the worst, if they are caught they get sent back, have no legal status and take no entitlements. Most have some family here that is legal. I think that is the group Rand is targeting. Give the illegals some status and citizenship path and we can gain the support of their legal family and friends and eventually them when they become citizens. From my personal experience they are decent hardworking conservative people with family values. They should be Republicans. The Cubans will probably go Rubio in the primary, but will support the nominee if he isn't horrible like Romney was.

The grassroots is pretty big. There are a lot of Tea Party grassroots conservatives that backed Bachmann or Cain or even Santorum. We can widen the tent by bringing them in. They will not be brought in by promises of amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Cubans will support Rubio, but if he is not the nominee, they are likely to go with the Dem instead. The Cuban Dem vote has increased steadily in recent years. According to some polls, Obama beat Romney among Cuban voters in Florida this year. I don't see many Cubans going with Rand Paul. The old Cubans especially will resent his foreign policy.

Mexican (and Central American, Peruvian, Columbian, etc) people who have come here illegally are most likely poor and so are their legal families. If they do somehow get citizenship, it will be under Barack Obama's Democratic presidency. They will also then become eligible for welfare and the Democratic Party will readily provide that. What makes you think they will somehow vote for Rand Paul, or any other Republican in 2016? Immigration reform is not the right way to tackle Latinos. You are right that Latinos often support family values. That is the best way to get a conservative message across to Latinos, focus on what we already have in common and market ourselves that way.

Daniel Hannan wrote a good article on this recently: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/d...-right-wing-parties-attract-immigrant-voters/

Securing the border and giving the illegals presently here a green card so they have legal status to work and pay taxes and setting them on our existing path to citizenship is NOT amnesty. That's what Rand proposed to do.

That's actually exactly what amnesty is...

In 2008, the least wanted candidates for bloggers were…John McCain and Ron Paul.

In 2012, the least wanted candidates for bloggers were…Mitt Romney and Ron Paul.
