Texas Gov. Rick Perry to host major prayer event in Houston

By Perry Bacon Jr. and Nia-Malika Henderson

HOUSTON — The GOP 2012 presidential nomination contest so far has centered almost exclusively on economic issues: the major candidates blasting President Obama for increasing the federal budget deficit and criticizing one another’s records on health care and job creation.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R), who is expected to announce his presidential candidacy in the next few weeks, will start to change that on Saturday, by hosting a day of prayer and fasting in Houston dubbed “The Response.”

Attendees from Texas and across the country will gather at a pro football stadium to ask for “God’s forgiveness, his wisdom and his provision for our state and nation,” according to Perry’s video invitation.

The event, originally conceived by Perry before he started laying groundwork for a presidential campaign, is one of the most explicit appeals to conservative Christians by any of the Republican hopefuls, and it will closely link his candidacy to his evangelical faith if he decides to run.

Evangelical Christians make up a critical voting bloc that could comprise more than half of the voters in some of the GOP primaries. But liberals are criticizing Perry, highlighting the controversial comments of some of the people he has invited to participate. And some Republicans worry that the Texas governor could hurt his prospects of winning the general election if he chooses to emphasize religion rather than his record of job creation.

It's a little different prayer than prayer Bush used to make with "May God continue to bless America" towards the end of his Iraq war speeches but nonetheless it's a prayer from another Texan.

Obama is absolutely responsible for making things worse by increasing spending spree but aren't pro war "christians" and foreign spending/crusading cheerleaders like Rick Perry also responseible for America's economic fall?
Sure Obama and pro spending liberals/neoconservatives should be blamed but are the only culprits who crashed America's economic future?

S&P debt downgrade today will cost US $100 Billion per year more to borrow money or in other words about the cost of a war much smaller than Iraq war.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. estimated that a downgrade would raise the nation’s borrowing costs by $100 billion a year.

Statement of Gov. Rick Perry on Capture of Saddam Hussein[/B
]Sunday, December 14, 2003 • Press Release

AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry today issued the following statement upon learning of the capture of Saddam Hussein:

"The capture of Saddam Hussein by American soldiers is a signature moment in world history. It is great news for the people of Iraq who for too long suffered under the brutal dictator, and it is a major victory over the forces of terrorism in the world. The world today is a safer

place because of the leadership of President George W. Bush as America continues to stand strong in defending the principles of freedom. While Hussein's capture is a major victory, the military's dangerous work is not over. I commend the men and women of our armed forces carrying out the mission of freedom throughout the world, and my thoughts and prayers remain with them and their families."

Not sure if late Jerry Falwell and John Hagee were also from same state as Perry/Bush but this is interesting advocacy of foreign spending exercises:

God is pro-war
January 31, 2004

By Rev. Jerry Falwell

Throughout the book of Judges, God calls the Israelites to go to war against the Midianites and Philistines. Why? Because these nations were trying to conquer Israel, and God's people were called to defend themselves.

President Bush declared war in Iraq to defend innocent people. This is a worthy pursuit. In fact, Proverbs 21:15 tells us: "It is joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity."

One of the primary purposes of the church is to stop the spread of evil, even at the cost of human lives. If we do not stop the spread of evil, many innocent lives will be lost and the kingdom of God suffers.

Finally, some reading this column will surely ask, "Doesn't the sixth commandment say, 'Thou shalt not kill?'"

Actually, no; it says: "Thou shalt not commit murder."

There is a difference between killing and murdering. In fact, many times God commanded capital punishment for those who break the law.

We continue to live in violent times. The Bible tells us war will be a reality until Christ returns. And when the time is right, Jesus will indeed come again, ending all wars.

Until that time, however, Christians must live as Galatians 6:2 instructs: "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."

Wow, this is just so hypocritical. It would be like praying to whoever your god is to kill, murder, and mame your enemies for you. Its also like suggesting that he doesnt have an actual solution to implement, just let it ride and let someone else (a supreme deity or a mathemetician) do the work for them. This is how we end up getting political leaders into office who only do what their advisors suggest, and their advisors are usually working for the Big Banks and some other political corporate funded interests.

No. We need a leader that can think for himself and come up with solutions that work.

You hit the nail on the head, H-word applies here perfectly.

Perry Urges Prayergoers to Turn to God for Answers to Nation's Troubles

Texas Gov. Rick Perry asked Christians to turn to God for answers to the nation's troubles as he held court Saturday over a national prayer rally attended by thousands of evangelical conservatives, an important constituency should the Republican seek the GOP presidential nomination.

"Father, our heart breaks for America," Perry told about 30,000 people gathered at Reliant Stadium. "We see discord at home. We see fear in the marketplace. We see anger in the halls of government and, as a nation, we have forgotten who made us, who protects us, who blesses us."

After the S&P downgrade news yesterday, there were couple of comments below from people who suggested God was angry at us, one even tried to blame it on Obama allowing gays to join military.

Does anyone here see a divine angle to the problems America faces today and more importantly the solution ( like Perry and at least 30,000 Texan evangelical Christians seem to suggest)?

Sure. The Hebrews turning their religion over to Pharisees and hypocrites. The Parable of the Talents. We refuse to put our very heads to work, and instead bury them in the sand...

haven't had time to run all the traps but guessing same 'evangelicals' who delivered 'christian' vote to Bushes at work for Perry; wondering if real believers are ready to wake up now or as my good friend @acptulsa says continue to 'bury [heads] in the sand'

amazes me how Ron Paul (a Christian) but a humble one, can tell the truth and vote on principle consistently and people not recognize what a precious gift he is and how much could be done if only the people would wake up and not be intimidated by media and false prophets, but than history is replete with examples and all we can do is hold the standard up and hope the troops will rally in time to save the nation...

He is praying to God to help a government(Kingdom) that the Bible prophesied God will destroy:

And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

He is praying for God to help the economy, even though the Bible says at Ezekiel 7:19 the economy will collapse:

"They will throw their money in the streets, tossing it out like worthless trash. Their silver and gold won't save them on that day of the LORD's anger. It will neither satisfy nor feed them, for their greed can only trip them up.

Will God listen to Perry's prayers, even though He has predestined this wicked system, including all governments, to be destroyed?

My bible says that Rick Perry is the anti-christ and we should burn him at the stake. Let's do it because a book written by a bunch of fools hundreds and hundreds of years ago says so.

Yup.

If you can write something better than this, I'd like to see you try.

Blessed are...

the poor in spirit: for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.
they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Not trying to to drag religion into the debate, but this is Jesus attempting to teach the basic concept of Liberty thousands of years before its time. Ron Paul lives by all of these rules, which are all too quickly forgotten by so-called "Evangelicals" who are more swayed by emotion than reason. These are exactly who Perry is going after.

Evangelicals are the easist vote for neo-cons to capture because they are of limited intelligence (self imposed) and emotionally immature. They are natural 'followers' of whatever preacher has captured the day. And are easy marks for lying politicians running for office. Perry is making a calculated move in capturing their vote because he knows Christians of mainstream denominations are able to think for themselves.
I used to be evangelical once, then I grew up.

Best not to say it like that. You will never get the vote if you do. But ya, Perry is playing what ever game he thinks he needs to in order to get the nomination. I don't know how sick a person would have to be in order to dance with those people like he is doing but there you go.

Ron Paul is somehow going to have to prove that he loves Jesus more then the rest of them or no nomination.

We all know how good the Evangelicals have been in the past at choosing candidates. At least Glenn Beck has them paying more attention to Israel. If he can keep them sidetracked long enough with fine talk and shinny things we could still the show.

I'm sure there are evangelicals out there who support Ron Paul. More power to them.
But here is the problem and it cannot be avoided. The politics of most evangelical churches is tied into their theology. A novel theology called 'Dispensationalism' invented around the first decade of the 20th century. Without boring you with the details, the bottom line of it is a near worship of the state of Israel that they believe is the same Israel of the Bible.
To even HINT that Israel needs to be treated like any other country and not get preferential treatment is basic blasphemy to them. Thier support of Perry, like Bush before him, is linked to his support of Israel, plain and simple. It's part of their theology, the whole 'Left Behind' philosophy. They truly believe God will curse America if we stop supporting Israel (completely misinterpreting an Old Testament passage). They are all for the 'War on Terror' because it "protects" Israel from the infidals.
It's not attacking thier (evangelicals) religion, they are entitled to believe whatever they want.
But they have to take a good look at what they believe, in order to have their eyes opened to the state of our country.

That is creppy... seeing Perry's giant head on that screen. Typical. He will only undermine Bachmann though... so he does not hurt us much IMO.

Truth to that... RP is not going to get their vote. My mother in law is one of them. She has said, "We need war." It's a true perversion of Christianity.
