Republican Convention hardball

Here's a scenario for the Republican convention:

First, the setup:
1. No candidate has enough delegates going in to the convention to win on the first ballot.
2. Ron has some delegates, but not enough to win on the first ballot.

The convention closer for Ron:
1. The Constitution Party drafts Ron as their candidate.
2. The Libertarian Party drafts Ron as their candidate.

This guarantees Ron a place on the ballot in probably all 50 states.

So... Ron goes to the Republican convention with a card to play -- either nominate Ron Paul, or lose the election.

Would the Republicans fall on their swords to protect their 'honor', or would they go for their only chance to win, and nominate Ron Paul. The only chance for Ron to win would be to capture the Republican nomination; the only way for the Republicans to win would be to nominate Ron Paul.

This would be political hardball.... but we're playing in the big leagues here, aren't we?

Of course the ideal is to go for plan A: win the nomination on the first ballot. By the time the Constitution Party convention and the LP convention roll around, we'll know whether this kind of play could even be made.

Personally I love having the GOP over a barrel, which Ron Paul certainly does. Either elect our man or we take our tremendous grassroots support and millions of dollars with us and fight against you and Hillary.

We could brand the GOP nominee (Ghouliani) and Hillary as being the same. It would be SO easy and voters from the right and left would flock to our position.

They would fall on their swords, because they're stubborn like a mule.

Hi Jim,

I think that's a serious possibility. That said, the scenarios would likely be resolved after the LP and CP conventions but before the Republican one.

Do you mean telling them of a fusion Constitution-Libertarian-Republican ticket? I don't know if they delegates would go for that.

Isn't the constitutional party throwing its support behind RP already? The Libertarian party is still in question from what I understand.

On a side note, I've always thought that having a both a Libertarian and a constitutional party was ridiculous. I know there are some differences but when your fighting for a third party spot... (shrug)

Constitution Party tends toward theocracy. I like this idea, but don't push it til later.
