Republican Art Robinson outraises Oregon Rep. Peter DeFazio in last quarter
Published: Thursday, July 19, 2012, 9:31 AM Updated: Thursday, July 19, 2012, 10:02 AM

The new congressional campaign disclosure reports are out, and they show a series of sleepy U.S. House races in Oregon -- with one exception.

Once again, Republican Art Robinson is proving to be a determined challenger to Rep. Peter DeFazio, at least if the campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission are any indication.

In the last quarter, Robinson raised more money than DeFazio -- $182,446 to $153,605 -- as he once again tapped into a national network of donors. Robinson, a chemist who lives in Cave Junction, markets a home-school curriculum and an energy newsletter that has subscribers around the country.

DeFazio is still in a much more solid position when it comes to campaign money. As of June 30, he had just over $645,000 in the bank while Robinson had less than $50,000.

Of course, DeFazio also has to wonder if Robinson will be the beneficiary of an independent spending campaign as he was in 2010. That year, New York hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer spent $627,500 on ads attacking DeFazio and praising Robinson. It appeared Mercer was not happy about DeFazio's support for a tax on certain types of securities transactions.

In any case, DeFazio won by about 9 percentage points in a year that favored Republicans. So he might have an easier time this year. But the latest FEC reports offer further proof he can't rest easy like the other members of the delegation.

Art Robinson is awesome! Help him get to congress. This district is not difficult for conservatives to get.

If we can get people posting abou him regularly, we can have a forum.. Just not enough posts or threads yet..

This is great news. Art is an amazing candidate and DeFazio is beyond awful.

For some reason I've been wondering why we haven't been hearing more about this race and Art... Seems to be one of the better chances we have

Maybe because Art is a Christian libertarian who wrote his own Christian homeschool curriculum and therefore is not cool enough to the vast majority of kids in the liberty movement? Just a guess....

And of course he is a Christian and a scientist at the same time. Wayyyyyy to strange for your average liberty movement devotee.

Is there any people in Oregon that are keeping up with this race?

Some more posts or really anything from the campaign and ground support would be a big boost to support from the national level here I would think. I could care less what a persons religion is, just as long as they hold our ideology, when they vote.

The Pauls are religious and have advance degrees in science.

Yes, but according to many people in the "liberty movement" (mostly 20-something kids who think Carl Sagan is the bomb), it is impossible to be a Christian and a competent scientist at the same time.

Art Robinson blows all of the preconceived notions away because he is an avowed creationist, promoter of nuclear energy, and Ron Paul supporting libertarian. He is more libertarian than Rand and Amash. He is the nut kook that the secular left loves to make fun of....a survivalist, homeschooling, creationist, Christian scientist, libertarian.

In the end though, there is a market for what he offers. As long as that's true, and he believes in freedom of the markets, then where's the problem...at least with anyone in the liberty movement supporting him? This is difficult for people who lean to a collectivist world view to get their minds around: that someone has beliefs but no agenda to force them on others.
For example, supporters of Rick Santorum have difficulty seeing down the road where the tables are turned and another politician with an opposing agenda uses the same power to reverse any "gains". They say FDR won election by promising to repeal Prohibition.

Robinson gets my vote!

I have followed the guy for many years now (his nuke bomb shelters or TNA articles were
my 1st introduction to him). I always find him very interesting. I do not understand his take
on creation though.
BTW, I also purchased that home school curriculum as soon as it was
completed and made available by his own smart kids (in the early 1990's?) soon after his
wife died. She obviously could no longer continue their family's home schooling lessons.

The problem is that whenever threads were made, there was a chorus of "He can't win" and that shuts down much of the momentum. Give the guy a forum and that alone helps his credibility. He's running a strong race and deserves attention. He could easily be the next RP in the House.
