Reflections on my experience as a delegate at the Texas State Convention

Wow that's good to know! David Hamilton represents part of my city or school district.

Yeah, I forgot to post much here about David, because he was unopposed in the GOP Primary. I believe it is pretty much a Blue district. David says he is a Ron Paul fan, it would be awesome if he won. You might want to get involved with his campaign if you are in the area again, and can. it's a great way to meet like minded people.

Yeah he is at a disadvantage. The district he is a majority black/hispanic area. If he could swap skin colors with me, he would probably have a better chance x_x

I only made it today, had a great time. ... Gotta say, Chairman Steve Munisteri disappointed me greatly. I had heard good things about him before, but major MEH. No doubt other States have worse, though.

You showed up too late! The real important business (voting for your SD's committee and SREC members) happened Thursday and Friday. Friday afternoon was the voting on the new rules. Sorry you missed that as it was pretty interesting.

I knew Saturday was going to be a shit-show (platform debate), so I left. I would have stayed if the platform actually meant anything, but it doesn't so I didn't.

I participated in the platform debate in 2012, but left late in the evening to get some sleep. They went until midnight that session and folks who stayed for the whole thing told me it was brutal. Munisteri was and is very accommodating IMO.

I know that, I really wanted to make it, but things came up, sadly. Feel free to tell us more about what happened on the other days.

I got to meet Ben Carson and David Hamilton on sunday. I didn't expect Hamilton to be there and when I saw him, he recognized me from facebook :D

Apparently the GOP is trying to be tougher on immigration now. They also are allowing pushing medical marijuana. I think we have a chance of convincing Abbott to get marijuana legislation passed if he's willing to support not picking winners and losers.

* bump *

I went to my precinct convention Tuesday night. The last few cycles, I was 1 of 4 or so people to show up. This time, we had 8 people show up (me included).

The building where we hold our precinct convention is also the meeting place for ~5 other precincts. The last few times, we all met in a large meeting room and separated out into different corners. This time, they used that room as a polling station, so it was full of voting booths and we couldn't use the room. We (all) met in a small break room. It was a bit crowded, but we managed. Interestingly, the other precincts seemed to have equal or less people than years past. It seemed like my precinct was the only one with a bigger turnout than previous years.

If the rest of my senate district had similar turnout to what I saw at my precinct (which is not a given), I expect that everyone who attends the Senate District convention and wants to be a delegate to State will be able to go (just like 2014).

I'm looking forward to seeing all my Ron Paul friends again (at least the ones who I expect will be at the SD convention). I don't know if anyone is still keeping in touch anymore or not. I definitely lost contact with everyone.

Attended my Senate District (SD) convention on Saturday. It was mostly uneventful, but I'll share a few observations:
  • Texas' national committeewoman was the first speaker of the day. She stressed that the rumors of the RNC planning to rig or steal the election are false. They will fully support whoever the nominée ends up being. She also referred to Curly Haugland (though not directly by name) and said his efforts to change the rules did not have broad support.
  • Platform bs was somewhat interesting this time. Platform committee had prepared a condensed 10 point summary of Republican values. That was followed by 11 pages of amendments proposed by folks at the precinct conventions. First motion from the floor was to strike the 11 pages of amendments. It passed. God crowd kept trying to amend the high level summary with typical stuff like "no Sharia law", "marriage is 1 man, 1 woman", "abortion is murder", etc. All of them except the marriage one were defeated. Everyone in my precinct voted with me to defeat each amendment. Was good to see that the "make the GOP an extension of my church" crowd was getting shouted down.
  • Attendance was on par with past conventions. My SD is Cruz territory, so maybe not indicative of other areas, but there was no "Trump bump". No ground game was evident.
  • Lt. Gov Dan Patrick showed up and talked for a bit. He actually seemed quite lucid and sane.

Yesterday, I was out and about in my local community and I ran into my precinct captain (who also happens to be the one who chaired our SD convention and recently ran for mayor of our town, but lost). She recognized me and told me that she had recommended me for some committee work (don't know which). Told me to expect contact from someone in the party soon.

  • She's lying.
