The officers themselves acknowledged more than $100k in cash, so he still got skimmed. I hope he is awarded millions by 12 angry fellow Americans. It's time to take our country back, not with firearms, but with plain old commonsense. Stephen Lara did everything right. But, as subscribers of our YouTube channel know well, even innocent people aren’t safe from civil forfeiture.

Stephen is a 39-year-old retired Marine from Lubbock, Texas. He is a devoted father of two teenage daughters and, once a month, he drives from Texas to see them in California, where they live with their mother. Eager to be closer after spending the pandemic in Texas caring for his elderly parents, he has been shopping for a home near the California-Nevada border.

In February 2021, Stephen was making his usual trip west through Reno when he was pulled over by the Nevada Highway Patrol for supposedly following a tractor-trailer too closely.

The officer complimented Stephen’s driving, thanked him for observing the speed limit, and explained that NHP was “conducting a public information campaign” to help drivers avoid danger. Confident that the officer was only there to help, Stephen cooperated with his escalating investigation, even volunteering that he was carrying a large amount of cash.

Ninety minutes later, Stephen had been robbed of his life savings—$86,900—which he carried with him after a spate of robberies in his parents’ neighborhood. The officer who pulled Stephen over wanted to let him go; he was overruled by NHP Sergeant Glenn Rigdon, who ordered the money seized specifically so that it could be “adopted” by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

“Adoption” is a process by which federal law enforcement agencies can take over a seizure by state and local law enforcement. If the federal government is successful in forfeiting the property, its “equitable sharing” program guarantees the state or local agency that seized the property up to 80% of the proceeds for use in the agency’s budget.

In Stephen’s case, the DEA sat on his life savings for months, ignoring the legal deadlines requiring it to charge Stephen with a crime, begin a civil forfeiture case against his property, or return the money within six months of seizure. The DEA did none of those things. So, on August 30, IJ sued it in federal court on Stephen’s behalf.

Early the morning of September 1, the agency announced it would return all of Stephen’s money. In less than 24 hours, it had learned of our lawsuit, answered hard questions from The Washington Post, and committed to reviewing its policies for federal adoptions.

When we learned he would be getting his money back (filled with joy), he told us, “This isn’t over.”

And it isn’t. At the same time we filed in federal court, we also filed a major constitutional challenge in state court. Our state case aims to make federal adoptions impossible in Nevada as violations of the state constitution’s guarantees of reasonable seizures supported by probable cause and due process of law—not based on mere suspicion or for the financial benefit of the seizing agency. If we are successful, it will be the first time a state court has struck down federal adoptions. And a victory will take the profit motive out of roadside seizures.

The URL you used isn't recognized by the RPFs [video] tag.

Specifically the "m" at the start of the URL should be "www" instead, and the "#dialog" thing at the end should be removed. Like so:

Thanks. I used to be able to just hit share then copy on a YouTube video but it won’t let me do that now.
I’ll try your suggestions next time :)

From a desktop web browser, you should be able to do that.

In this case, that would be: https://youtu.be/MkeS_0NQUZs

That URL will also work with the [video] tag.

But if you use a mobile device like a phone, you might get a different URL (like one starting with "m" instead of "www") that won't work with the [video] tag.
 
One more thought. I used to dabble in old cars from the 1960s and 1970s. I would go to the old car shows such as Cars at Carlisle (PA). I would take about 8k in cash. Sometimes I'd buy; sometimes not.

It was hardly a huge amount, but I prolly couldn't even go to the bank today without being questioned.

Also, I wonder if IJ is suffering from some bad PR. The commies have usurped the word "justice," so calling oneself the Institute of Justice might turn liberty people away at first glance.

Infuriating. He should have received the amount back plus pain and suffering. Savages in uniform that do not deserve the respect the people in this country are continually giving them. These people speak and the people in this country act like it is the word of god. The worship of the blue seems to have taken precedence over religion and the golden rule.

That is why stuff like this continues to happen and no one wants to hold them accountable. All they have to say to others is "we suspect" he might be involved in ____. Then everyone bows down to the police as if the word of god has spoken and allows them to do whatever they want to people.

I think the people allow it since they are so damn brainwashed by a myriad of pro-cop propaganda that does not reflect the reality of this authoritarian and corrupt country we live in. We are no different from the third world we just have shiny new things and better propaganda.

That is how they usually do it, making highway robbery look all official and everything. However they also do it unofficially. From personal experience I have been robbed at gun point by police with witnesses having to turn over legally purchased land deeds in various parts of this country and at one point had a deed for a run down home I purchased at auction stolen from me at gun point by the police. At gun point I was forced to sign it over to the officer witnessed by the auction house that feared for their own safety.

All my actions, taxes and full payments were all above board. All my earnings provable and easily traceable.

It was simply corrupt cops wanting to enrich themselves and then there was the retribution for "talking" about their crimes against me to others aspect. I am not a rich man so this was repeatedly financially devastating each time affecting not only myself but my family and children.

Not saying anything profound here.

Throughout history, no tyrant, despot, authoritarian, fascist etc was able to do anything without enforcers, men who were willing to "just follow orders".
 
It is really sad to see Mr. Lara swallowing the whole boot.

I know that some people are ignorant of the world or lack empathy towards others, but it took this guy to get his ox gored to learn about the true nature of his friends in uniform.

Since he got his $$$ back with relative ease, I'll bet he still makes excuses for them.

It was not easy, he had to sue them, probably some costs there and he still did not get the whole amount back.

He had the benefit of being an ex-marine which carries allot of weight in our society and provided the extra benefit of some news media reporting. Countless poor slobs that don't have the status symbol like me are fucked trying to get back what was stolen.

But I absolutely get what you are saying about peoples thought process when it comes to their friends in uniform.

Just remembered, they also stole cash from me on the interstate while I was visiting Montana about 8 years back. I spent a short time in jail, got released but they would not give it to me back and I never got it back. No laws were broken. Same as everything else I wrote above.

My incidents however were due to retribution for whistle blowing but it did not matter where I went in the country since that is how corrupt law enforcement is. They all do favors for their brothers in blue no matter who they are or where they are from.
