Rand Paul: 'Thanks for the Hemp Jacket!'

Steve Bloom
January 16, 2015

"Thanks for the hemp jacket, Dannion!" Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) tweeted today. "Hemp is an important industry I've been fighting to bring back in the U.S."

Paul's wearing a blue sports jacket made from hemp. In the tweet, he's referring to author Dannion Brinkley, who's previously stated that military uniforms and hospital bedding in the VA should be made of hemp: "This would provide increased longevity, durability and would be cost effective. Even Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul wore a white oxford shirt made of hemp when he testified before the Kentucky legislature supporting the approval of hemp as a cash crop for Kentucky farmers."

Paul is a co-sponsor of the bi-partisan Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2015, which would "remove federal restrictions of the domestic cultivation of industrial hemp."

I was there when he was given the jacket. I hope he wears it, the color is very presidential.

Senator Rand Paul is now the proud owner of the ultimate smoking jacket: a custom-made, navy blue hemp blazer.

At a diner stop in Las Vegas on Friday, a fan of the senator’s surprised Mr. Paul with the blazer as a gift. It fit like a glove. And that was no coincidence.

The fan, Dannion Brinkley, said he had asked Mr. Paul’s staff for the right size, and they obliged. So when Mr. Paul, Republican of Kentucky, showed up to glad hand with voters, Mr. Brinkley was waiting.

...

Mr. Brinkley said in an interview that he had to get the jacket from Romania because it is illegal to trade in hemp in the United States. He told Mr. Paul that he wished the jacket had been made in America.

I've read his first book and listened to many interviews of Dannion Brinkley. He's a fascinating guy!

If only all publicity stunts were this nice :)

That Dannion Brinkley seems like a pretty neat guy.

As far as I know, it's only illegal to GROW hemp in the US. Canada grows a lot and we import it. And I believe there are clothes to be bought in little boutiques that are made of hemp and imported from places like India. So I'm not sure what Mr. Brinkley means. But nice story.
