Rand Paul should lobby Trump for Jim Webb as Secretary of Defense

Rumors that Jim Webb might be in the running. There was talk of making him VP (would have been better than Pence). Former Virgina Senator Webb wrote and spoke forcefully against Iraq and said he would not vote for Clinton this year. He also dissed Bush and the photo op with W He has experience since he was also Secretary of the Navy and Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs

Unfortunately there's more names of dedicated hardcore neocons out there being talked about more.

Rand should try to do whatever he can to intervene. He could use this a way to open a line of communication to Trump and signal an area they could work together on that's more popular and bi-partisan for both: America First foreign policy.

Maybe also even signal approval for Newt Gingrich as the better of the options Trump is considering for Secretary of State. Newt did acknowledge Iraq was a mistake: Newt Gingrich sees major Mideast mistakes, rethinks his neocon views on intervention

We can't afford another person being elected on a humble foreign policy and then having the people around the President cook intelligence and march the country toward war. I wonder if there's anything we can do as a movement to influence this? Right now it looks like the neocons are making a power grab and it's Bush all over again.

Trump owes those scheming hacks nothing and if he wants to get them back for their consistent mockery and betrayal I know of nothing better than appointing an America First foreign policy cabinet. Trump may be a lot of things but a chump pushover for the people that laughed at him I don't think is one of them.

He isnt going to be sec of the treasury. He opposes the neocon warmongers and is a good choice for defense.

I'm pretty old school, but Webb is a bit long in the tooth. I'd prefer Rep Martha McSally.

Jim Webb needs to be the token Democrat. I would give him a lesser position than Secretary of Defense though.

CBS thinks it could happen! "Commentary: Will Jim Webb be Trump's secretary of Defense?". Rand's campaign against Bolton may be helping the situation!

"That resume didn’t serve him in his no-hope bid for the Democratic nomination last year. But it would likely make a Senate confirmation vote a breeze, and that fact alone could make a Webb nod tempting to Trump’s White House team.

John Bolton and Rudy Giuliani, two floated names for Trump’s secretary of State, could easily be stuck in confirmation hearings for months. (Sen. Rand Paul is already saying he’ll do anything possible to stop Bolton.)

Meanwhile, Steve Bannon’s elevation to White House strategist has already produced tremendous blowback. Possible Defense pick Gen. Michael Flynn could face trouble explaining some of his foreign ties. And getting an immigration hardliner like Kris Kobach or Jeff Sessions to a major post could be a hard-fought battle as well.

Not so with Webb, a known quantity that would likely appease both Trump fans and some detractors within Washington officialdom. It would also give Trump a Democrat in his cabinet. Cross-party moves like that tend to be attractive to presidents, and may be particularly so to an off-and-on Democrat like Trump.

It would also reassure supporters and critics alike that Trump has no intention of getting the U.S. into a war. Webb, unlike Trump, was an early and outspoken critic of the Iraq War, a position that launched his career in electoral politics. His non-interventionist bona fides are rock solid."
