Opinion: Rebels challenge leaders in both parties
David Goodman, a political activist in New Jersey, urged those fed up with mainstream politics, whether on the left or the right, to work together in a Trenton Times op-ed entitled, “A new populist alliance: Why progressives and the Tea Party should work together.”
These “extremes” are not really that far apart, Salena Zito, a columnist for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, suggests, but really just reflect the mixed bag of opinions most voters have and which keeps them from fitting into the neat categories of politicians and pundits.
“Populism is alive and humming across America,” Zito wrote in a recent column. “This movement has no name, nor does it want one — because people know how the political classes manipulate and demonize them for personal glory or to exploit fear.”
It will be an interesting two years.
