Videos watched by the Southport killer could encourage further atrocities and must be removed by social media companies, the Home Secretary has said.

Yvette Cooper warned that social media bosses were “failing to act” on extreme content accessed by Axel Rudakubana before he murdered three young girls in July. She said such “unacceptable” material might “inspire other attacks”.

Rudakubana, who has been sentenced to at least 52 years in jail, viewed footage of an Islamist terror attack on a bishop in Australia, and illegally downloaded an al-Qaeda manual.

Ms Cooper and Peter Kyle, the Science Secretary, wrote to Google, TikTok, X and Meta – which owns Facebook and Instagram – in the wake of last week’s sentencing.

Ms Cooper is considering whether to require online retailers to ask for two types of ID from anyone buying a knife.

Rudakubana bought the kitchen blade used in the attack from Amazon when he was 17, despite having a conviction for violence and having admitted carrying a knife more than 10 times.

Home Office plans could mean buyers will have to submit an ID document to an online retailer and record a live video or take a selfie to prove their age.

Sir Keir Starmer said the case showed it “remains shockingly easy” for children to get their hands on deadly knives, and the need to change the law “could not be clearer”.

They can not jail everybody, and every time High Chancellor Starmer cracks down even harder, more people will slip through his grasp.

Or so I'd like to think.

But I know that's just infantile fantasy.

You have to ask yourself when will it be too much for the police, national guard and military personnel to just say I can’t follow these orders against my own people. I would have a hard time if I was an officer participating in this. A moral dilemma in my eyes.
