DES MOINES, Iowa - Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul on Thursday said he expects to gain support from people who previously backed Tom Tancredo because of his tough stand against illegal immigration.

"His views and my views were very similar, and therefore we will be picking up support from those individuals not only here in this state but throughout the country," Paul said at an event in a downtown Des Moines hotel.

"One of the reasons I think that we do such a poor job on protecting our borders is the fact that leaders on both sides of the aisle strongly support the notion that we should have a union, where you literally obliterate the borders and have the three countries become one and that to me is a lot different than being friends," Paul said.

Paul said he opposes international organizations like the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization because they impinge the U.S. government‘s autonomy. In addition, Paul opposes the North American Free Trade Agreement.

At the event, Paul received the personal endorsement of a leader of the Iowa chapter of the national Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. The group said it supports strengthening the U.S. border to prevent illegal immigrants and contraband from entering the country.

I wonder if the NAU stuff is a good idea to mention... Anyway, it's Ron, not like I can stop him from telling it like it is.

The NAU is a very big concern among Tancredo's supporters, so I don't think it will hurt anything in that demographic.

I think if RP has proven one thing during this campaign, it is that he is always going to say exactly what he thinks. No pandering, no hedging. That's why we EVOL him!

I remember Tancredo complementing

Ron Paul during one of the debates. Unfortunately, he went on to support the war.

If RP quit and endorsed Mitt "let's double Guantanamo" Romney, I would view him as a sellout - so I have to assume that at least some of the Tancredo supporters feel the same.

RP isn't going to let us down though - he is going to keep campaigning until the end.

I wonder if Tancredo's supporters view him as a sellout?

Right now I'm hitting the phones in Iowa and calling all the former Tancredo supporters. The answer to your question is that over half of them do view him as a sellout. They are coming over to Paul in droves. The others are mostly going to Thompson and Romney.
