Pakistan's Prime Minister Warns India Has Caught "War Hysteria"

The conflict between India and Pakistan that erupted last month following a deadly terror attack on a caravan of Indian soldiers that was purportedly carried out by a Pakistan-based Islamist group has faded from the headlines. But that doesn't mean the tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors and bitter geopolitical enemies have subsided.

With weeks left before a crucial election, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata have been upping their belligerent rhetoric, hoping to appear strong before hundreds of millions of voters take to the polls. Gazing apprehensively across the border, Pakistani Prime Minister (and former cricket legend) Imran Khan told the Financial Times that he's worried more hostilities could erupt before the election. India is in the grip of "war hysteria", he said.
"I’m still apprehensive before the elections, I feel that something could happen," Mr Khan said at his office in Islamabad in the wake of the most serious conflict between the nuclear-armed countries in decades.
Khan conceded that Pakistan must do everything in its power to crush Islamist terror cells like Jaish-e-Mohammad, but he insisted that the Pakistani state doesn't have any links to the group, and that Modi was had acted aggressively by launching a missile strike on Pakistani soil in retaliation for the deadly terror attack (India said the missile strike targeted a JeM training camp, though Pakistan has disputed this).
The "new Pakistan" has been cracking down on terrorists, he insisted. Moreover, how could Indian blame Pakistan for the attack when the young man who carried out the deadly Feb. 14 suicide bombing that killed more than 40 Indian paramilitary soldiers was Ian Indian Kashmiri who was purportedly radicalized after an encounter with India's security services? Perhaps Modi's own heavy-handed crackdown on Muslims was to blame for the attack, Modi suggested.
Mr Khan redirected blame for the deadly attack to what he called Mr Modi’s “anti-Muslim” government and its heavy-handed policies in Indian-administered Kashmir, the divided Muslim-majority province that both sides claim as their own.
"There’s Jaish-e-Mohammad in India, the boy who blew himself up, the 19-year-old boy, was a Kashmiri-Indian boy," said Mr Khan. "His parents said he was radicalised by some abuse by the security force. So it was an Indian boy, Indian operation, Indian car, Indian explosive. Why was Pakistan blamed?"
If he could say one thing to the Indian public, it would be a warning: All of this warmongering rhetoric is geared toward winning an election.
Indian television channels have also ratcheted up the nationalist rhetoric, prompting Islamabad to accuse the ruling Bharatiya Janata party of exploiting the conflict to win over voters ahead of polls in April. “When Pulwama [the suicide attack in Kashmir] happened I felt that Mr Modi’s government used that to build this war hysteria,” said Mr Khan, holding prayer beads in his left hand. "The Indian public should realise that this is all for winning the elections. It’s nothing to do with the real issues of the subcontinent."
The first phase of the vote will be held on April 11. Following the eruption of hostilities last month - the most serious military conflict between the two neighbors in nearly fifty years - world powers scrambled to try and mediate. But with India eager to establish itself as a global power, pleas for peace might just fall on deaf ears. When it comes to conventional weapons firepower, India has a massive advantage over Pakistan. But Pakistan has said it wouldn't hesitate to use tactical nuclear weapons if Indian tanks roll over the line of control.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) detected four Pakistani F-16 fighter jets and an armed drone near the international border with Pakistan on Monday morning in the Khemkaran sector of Punjab.

New Delhi (Sputnik): Defence sources told Sputnik that the IAF scrambled Su-30MKI and Mirage 2000 jets to intercept Pakistani warplanes, forcing them to return to their airspace immediately.

“Indian radars detected the movement of the four Pakistani F-16 fighter jets at around 0300 hrs local time on Monday, in response; the Indian Air Force scrambled its Sukhoi Su-30MKI and Mirage-2000 fighter jets immediately,” source added.
The Indian Army and the IAF have remained on high alert after Indian intelligence warned about a possible deployment of armed drones and increased activities of the PAF along the international border since mid-March.

Over the last weeks, six Pakistani drones have entered the area. Earlier, the Indian Army shot down two Pakistani UAVs in Sri Ganganagar after they reportedly violated Indian airspace.
On 4 March, a Pakistani drone which tried to infiltrate the Bikaner sector of Rajasthan was shot down by an air-to-air missile fired from an Indian Su-30 fighter jet. On 27 February, the Indian Army shot down a Pakistani drone along the India-Pakistan border in Kutch in the state of Gujarat, which shares a border with Pakistan.

Pakistan has reiterated that the situation at the border with India remains on high alert and that its forces will remain on alert, as directed by Prime Minister Imran Khan last week.Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesman Dr. Muhammad Faisal said on Wednesday that the Pakistanis wished for de-escalation of border tensions vis-a-vis India.
“There is a difficult situation with India. We wish for de-escalation and are taking steps for this. The situation like the prime minister said remains on alert”, Dr. Faisal said in a video at Geo News.

Meanwhile, cross-LoC (Line of Control) trade on the Poonch-Rawalakot route was suspended following the deterioration of the situation on Tuesday, when four army men, three Pakistani and one Indian, were killed in different incidents of cross-border firings while over a dozen civilians were injured.

During a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security on Tuesday, Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the three branches of the country’s defense forces — army, air force, and navy — were ready for another action against Pakistan, India TV News reported.
In his turn, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has voiced his belief that the possibility of an armed conflict with India is not yet over.

It was bound to happen sooner than later, but Indian media finally decided to play the “Pakistan card” by attempting to connect their neighbor’s ISI intelligence agency to the Sri Lankan terrorist attacks, a desperate narrative move that says a lot more about the Indian incumbent’s political vulnerability during the ongoing month-long electoral process than anything about Pakistan’s purported culpability in this tragedy.
The Cheap Shot That The Whole World Saw Coming
It was only a matter of time before Indian media predictably blamed Pakistan for the Sri Lankan terrorist attacks, which just happened earlier this week in a piece by Vicky Nanjappa for “Oneindia” about “How ISI radicalised Sri Lanka through the Pakistan High Commission“. The writer wasted no time in reminding the reader about a years-long scandal in Sri Lanka initiated by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) and claiming that a Pakistani diplomat on the island nation was responsible for plotting a Mumbai-style attack in South India, never mind the fact that the incident that this allegedly masterminded one was being based on was actually a false flag. In fact, it can be argued that one of the consequences of the Mumbai attacks is that India capitalized on the manufactured notion that Pakistan’s ISI intelligence agency was behind it in order to portray its rival as a regional bogeyman who all of South Asia had to be suspicious of from then on out, so it’s logical in hindsight why India’s RAW intelligence agency would also cook up a conspiracy about this in Sri Lanka in an attempt to weaken historically strong Pakistani-Sri Lankan relations.

Last month, Pakistan reportedly deployed medium-range LY-80/HQ-16 air defense systems near border bases to prevent any fresh intrusions by the Indian Air Force.

Amid simmering tensions between India and Pakistan, the Indian Army is planning to move its air defense units closer to the border with Pakistan in a bid to thwart any aerial threat from the other side in the near future. The decision was taken to move air defense units to forward areas after intense assessment of the threat posed by Pakistan.
“Some of the fighting formations, including air defense and other defensive formations, are now planned to be moved closer to the borders. With these air defense units deployed closer to the border, we would be able to tackle any possible aerial strike from enemy side and thwart it close to the border itself,” Indian news agency ANI quoted a top army official as saying on Tuesday.
Air defense assets of the Indian Army include the indigenous Akash air defense missile systems, along with the Russian Kvadrat and other older legacy systems.

Besides surface to air missile systems, Islamabad has reportedly also deployed additional Chinese-made Rainbow CH-4 and CH-5 drones, for surveillance.
According to reports, Pakistan is in talks with Russia for the procurement of missiles and air-defense systems.

Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command of the Indian Army, said last week that the Pakistan Army "dare not try and come anywhere across the Line of Control (LoC) to carry out any kind of actions." Shortly after, Special Forces of India were equipped with high-powered American and Italian sniper rifles along the LoC.

A defense official told Greater Kashmir that "elite units of Army deployed along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir have been provided with the new US and Italian made snipers after proper training from US and Italian experts. The move is aimed to curb infiltration."

The defense official said a shift in warmer temperatures in Kashmir has melted snow, allowing militants, generally funded by Pakistan, to cross the India–Pakistan border. "To ensure zero infiltration, latest snipers will play a crucial role," the official claimed.
Elaborating more on the new sniper rifles, the official said soldiers deployed along LoC are now carrying Barrett .50 caliber M95 and the Beretta .338 Lapua Magnum Scorpio TGT. "These rifles have a much longer range and power than the Russian made snipers being used by the soldiers so far. These snipers can fix the targets at the range of over 1,000 meters," the official said.

India on Sunday accused Pakistani security services of widespread harassment at an Indian embassy event in the capital Islamabad a day earlier, alleging that hundreds of guests were turned away and some of New Delhi's diplomats were "threatened".Guests arriving for a dinner at the luxury Serena Hotel in Islamabad faced "unprecedented harassment and intimidation" at the hands of Pakistani security agencies that even used a forklift truck to remove the cars of some attendees, according to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
The latest diplomatic spat shows that even after Narendra Modi's swearing-in as India’s prime minister for a second term last week, tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations remain high.
India said about 300 guests were turned away from attending Saturday's iftar dinner at the hotel, where many embassies host such functions during the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims break their day-long fast at sunset with an iftar meal.
The Indian High Commission, asking Pakistan to investigate, said some of its officials and diplomats were "jostled, pushed, abused, aggressively threatened with bodily harm" and in some cases had their phones snatched by Pakistani security officials.
"The disappointing chain of events on June 1 not only violate basic norms of diplomatic conduct but are against all notions of civilized behavior," the Indian High Commission said in a statement.
Pakistan's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
But India's allegations follow similar complaints by Pakistan about the way Indian security forces behaved outside Pakistan National Day celebrations at the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi in March.
Several Indian journalists and former Indian government officials who were guests at the reception were approached by men in plainclothes who said they worked for the Delhi police and asked guests not to go to the event because it was being boycotted by the Indian government.
They also asked for personal details of those they challenged, including name, organization, job title, and phone number. In some cases, photographs were taken. The intimidation was enough to prompt some journalists to drive away without attending.
