but research in this BBC health report seems to pour cold water on fun living. Pretty creative they put TV remote in that photo.

Parkin and colleagues found that of the 158,700 cancers diagnosed in men each year, the top six risk factors impacted as follows (numbers of cases rounded up to the nearest 100):

Tobacco use: 23% (36,500 cases).
Lack of fruit and vegetables; 6.1% (9,600 cases).
Occupation (eg exposure to asbestos): 4.9%. (7,800 cases).
Alcohol use: 4.6% (7,300 cases).
Overweight and obesity: 4.1% (6,500).
Too much exposure to sun/sunbeds: 3.5% (5,500).

Of the 155,600 cancers diangosed in women each year, the top six risk factors were:

Tobacco use 15.6% (24,300 cases).
Overweight and obesity 6.9% (10,800 cases).
Infections (eg human papillomavirus, HPV) 3.7% (5,800 cases).
Too much exposure to sun/sunbeds: 3.6% (5,600).
Lack of fruit and vegetables; 3.4% (5,300 cases).
Alcohol use: 3.3% (5,100 cases).

Interesting. I've never really thought of "lack of fruits and vegetables", "alcohol", and "overweight" as risk factors for cancer. Other health problems certainly.

Lack of fruits and veggies corresponds with fiber defficiency. When fecal matter gets stuck in your colon, those toxins harm the colon cells and, through time, they mutate into cancerous cells.

Colon/rectal cancer would be the biggy you get for not getting enough fiber.

Cigarettes aren't really "fun", although I will occasionally suck one down when I'm really drunk and having fun.. the real problem comes when you are smoking consistently on a daily basis.

People who drink low to moderate amounts of alcohol have a longer average lifespan than those who abstain.

Cannabis certainly won't shorten your lifespan, and that is good times as well.

There are plenty of healthful and delicious foods that don't make you overweight, I see people being overweight as a problem with cravings for highly processed/manufactured foods with highly addictive ingredients or ingredients that make you crave more junk food, i.e. high fructose corn syrup, msg

I don't see sex on the list either, but I do see lack of exercise :D

They needed a study to prove this? It seems that common sense would tell you that all of those things are unhealthy, especially in excess. Yes, most cigarettes are jam packed with carcinogens. Yes, being fat is unhealthy. Yes, you're suppose to eat a healthy diet with fruits and veggies. Yes, it's unhealthy to regularly get hammered.

I do, however, disagree that sun causes cancer. There's plenty of evidence to refute this. And the "infection" in the women's group could really be curtailed by lifestyle (healthy diet, sleep, exercise, etc.).

No, lack of fruit and vegetables causing cancer would be do to the lack of anti-oxidants in your diet, allowing free-radicals to run rampant in your body doing tons of damage.
