Biden issues 39 presidential pardons and commutes 1,500 sentences

US President Joe Biden has issued presidential pardons to 39 Americans convicted of non-violent crimes, and commuted the sentences of nearly 1,500 others, including several convicted of multi-million dollar fraud schemes.

The White House described it as the most acts of presidential clemency issued in a single day. It comes after Biden made the decision to pardon his own criminally convicted son, Hunter Biden.
...
Among those who had their sentences commuted was 76-year-old Timothy McGinn, a former stockbroker convicted in 2013 of defrauding hundreds of clients for millions of dollars, wiping out savings for many of his victims.

Another person who received clemency, a former Ohio county commissioner, Jimmy Dimora, was convicted in 2012 of taking $450,000 (£355,000) in bribes that included lavish trips to Las Vegas, prostitutes and a stone-fired pizza oven.

Also on the list were Paul Daugerdas, convicted of overseeing fraudulent tax shelters in 2014, and Elaine Lovett, convicted of defrauding federal health insurance programme Medicare as part of a $26m scheme in 2017.

What To Know

"These clemency recipients have each made significant contributions to improving their communities," Biden said in a statement released by the White House. He emphasized that the individuals pardoned had shown exemplary rehabilitation or, in Garvey's case, symbolized a broader societal reckoning.

The full list of individuals granted clemency includes:

  • Anthony Fauci: Fauci was director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infection Disease during the COVID pandemic in Trump's first administration. He was the target of right-wing criticism over his stance on vaccines and the origin of the pandemic.
  • Mark Milley: Milley was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during Trump's first presidency. He has said Trump is a fascist and a "wannabe dictator."
  • Members and staff of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol: Lawmakers involved in the final report were: chair Bennie G. Thompson D-MS), vice chair Liz Cheney (D-WY), Zoe Lofgren D-CA, Adam B. Schiff (D-CA), Pete Aguilar California (D-CA), Stephanie N. murphy (D-FL), Jamie Raskin (D-MD) Elaine G. Luria (d-VA) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL).
  • Marcus Mosiah Garvey: Garvey's 1923 mail fraud conviction led to his imprisonment and eventual deportation. Advocates have long argued that the case was driven by political motives aimed at silencing his activism. Biden's pardon acknowledges this historical injustice.
  • Ravidath "Ravi" Ragbir: Convicted in 2001, Ragbir is now a well-known advocate for immigrant and faith communities. His conviction was for a non-violent offense, but he was sentenced to two years and six months in prison. Since his release, Ragbir "has advocated for vulnerable immigrant communities and families in New York and New Jersey," according to the White House.
  • Don Leonard Scott, Jr.: Scott was previously convicted of a non-violent drug offense in 1994, and was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment, according to the White House. After his release, he has worked as an attorney and went on to be elected to the Virginia state legislature in 2019. He became the first Black speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates in 2024.
  • Kemba Smith Pradia: Pradia was convicted of a non-violent drug offense in 1994 and was sentenced to 24 years in prison. She has become is a criminal justice advocate, and former President Bill Clinton commuted her sentence in 2000.
  • Darryl Chambers: Convicted in 1998 of a non-violent drug offense, Chambers was sentenced to 17 years' imprisonment. Chambers founded the Center for Structural Equity and is also the executive director of the Youth Empowered to Strive and Succeed Program.

Biden previously controversially pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, last month after previously insisting he would never take such action. Hunter was set to be sentenced in two separate criminal cases: a felony gun charge and federal tax fraud. The president's son was convicted of three separate felony charges related to the 2018 purchase of a revolver in June 2024. He also admitted nine tax evasion charges in September.

Biden Pardons Three Chinese Spies

In a controversial move that has undermined the United States, outgoing President Joe Biden granted clemency to a convicted Chinese spy, raising alarms about national security and the integrity of his leadership. Critics argue that this decision reflects a troubling pattern of leniency toward adversaries while undermining the concerns of American citizens who prioritize safety and sovereignty. As the lame-duck Biden-Harris Administration faces scrutiny over its handling of foreign relations and domestic policy, the president’s decision to pardon convicted criminals has become a focal point for those questioning his commitment to protecting the interests of the nation amidst global tensions.

This week, Biden announced that he would pardon three Chinese nationals in a hostage exchange deal. According to a National Security Council spokesperson, three Americans are being wrongfully held by Beijing.

Yanjun Xu and Ji Chaoqun, convicted of espionage against the U.S., were granted clemency last month. This move raises serious questions about Biden’s role as POTUS to uphold that nation’s integrity of our justice system. In addition, Shanlin Jin, who faced convictions for possessing over 47,000 images of child pornography while pursuing his doctorate at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, will also be pardoned. This undoubtedly undermines the U.S. and sends a concerning message about foreign nationals in our country.

Biden grants clemency to fmr. doctor who diluted chemotherapy drugs

Meera Sachdeva, a former doctor who owned the Rose Cancer Center in Summit, Mississippi, was sentenced in 2012 to 20 years in prison and three years of supervised release for engaging in Medicare fraud. The former doctor was also ordered to pay a $250,000 fine and was required to pay over $8.1 million in restitution.

According to The Center for Public Integrity, Sachdeva participated in “a multimillion-dollar health care fraud case in which prosecutors said old needles were reused, chemotherapy drugs were diluted and public and private insurance was overbilled millions.” The Washington Free Beacon reported that one of Sachdeva’s patients claimed they contracted HIV from an old needle used by her clinic.

Biden commutes death sentences of child killers and mass murderers 2 days before Christmas
By Steven Nelson
Published Dec. 23, 2024

President Biden on Monday commuted the sentences of 37 of the 40 men on federal death row — a list that includes at least five child killers and several mass murderers — while leaving off three notorious fiends.

In the stunning act of clemency just two days before Christmas, Biden, 82, gave the reprieve to some of the nation’s most violent murderers — nine of whom were found too dangerous to live after butchering fellow inmates — as part of his effort at “ensuring a fair and effective justice system,” the White House said.
...
Among those receiving the holiday cheer is Thomas Sanders, who in 2010 kidnapped and then shot 12-year-old Lexis Roberts four times and cut her throat in Louisiana — days after the girl watched as Sanders murdered her mother on a road trip near the Grand Canyon.
...
Jorge Avila-Torrez sexually assaulted and stabbed to death two girls — Laura Hobbs, 8, and Krystal Tobias, 9 — who had been riding their bicycles in their neighborhood in a suburb north of Chicago in 2005.
...
Iouri Mikhel, another clemency recipient, was convicted of murdering five Russian and Georgian immi*grants after kidnapping them for ransom, which in some cases was paid before he killed them anyway.

Kaboni Savage, meanwhile, was convicted of committing or ordering the deaths of 12 people including four children as a Philadelphia drug dealer — while James Roane, Jr. participated in the murder of 11 people as a drug dealer in Richmond, Va.

From the article:

President Biden on Monday commuted the sentences of 37 of the 40 men on federal death row...

“But guided by my conscience and my experience as a public defender, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Vice President, and now President, I am more convinced than ever that we must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level. In good conscience, I cannot stand back and let a new administration resume executions that I halted.”

Biden, who opposes the death penalty, lowered each of the 37 sentences to life in prison without parole. He did not say why specifically he considered the original penalties unjust.

It's almost as if you can make it say anything you want through the power of the screenshot

And what exactly is the error or missing context in the horrible "screenshot"?

Sometimes motivations are pretty clear. But the math and the stated purpose are explicitly given, and are not open to interpretation. Biden is claiming opposition to the death penalty, pardoning some particularly heinous criminals, but his blanket pardon seems to have left a few off. Biden (or should we say his handlers) did not comment on any individual cases, and made no individual justifications.

Thus, it is clearly not about opposition to the death penalty. Standard unequal "justice" from the Democrats. Some animals are more equal.

Imagine if they did explain themselves. Wouldn't that have been something?

Political virtue signaling and pardon overload explain it well enough.

You'd they'd put out some kind of statement. One that would explain why most had their sentences commuted while three others were not. Imagine if they had, that'd really have cleared things up.

If it can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Biden was NOT LAWFULLY ELECTED would that not INVALIDATE every action he has taken, including his PARDONS and EXECUTIVE ORDERS?

If that could be PROVEN beyond a reasonable DOUBT, then Trump would have SPENT the hundreds of millions of DOLLARS donated for ELECTION DEFENSE on that instead KEEPING IT for himself.
