Occupy NH members elected to NH House

Promising to counter the influence of Free State Project lawmakers, a ”handful” of Occupy New Hampshire members have been elected to the New Hampshire House. The group celebrated their electoral success on Facebook:

We aren’t going to reveal names, they can if they want. But we have 4 or 5 people who were very involved Occupiers, and another handful who were part of the network—either already Reps or newly elected. We got juice—or maybe just a little pulp.​

One Occupy member who has gone public with his association is Tim Smith, a Manchester Democrat who was the leading vote-getter in Hillsborough District 17. Smith expressed interest in forming an Occupy caucus for like-minded House members as a “counterbalance” to libertarians in the Republican Liberty Caucus, a group closely associated with the Free State Project.

Earlier this year, there was a public split in the Occupy New Hampshire movement between progressives and Free State Project members. Occupy leaders pointed to Free Stater support for deep budget cuts and anti-union legislation as being antithetical to the core Occupy message of social justice and economic equality.

This is so awesome! An occupier was also elected to the NH House in 2010. However, he was a Libertarian Party member, Republican free staters. No kidding.

Anyway, this just brings up a point I like to mention. It is much easier to get elected in NH than in other states. There aren't party bosses that select the candidates in most of the state. You don't have to suck up to leadership. You just have to know which way the wind is blowing and work it. Heck, if the wind is blowing very hard in your district, you might not even have to campaign.

BTW, Tim Smith seems to have little clue how politics works. Heck, many of the leadership of the occupy movement (if it even has leadership) is filled with free staters. Of course, there isn't a Republican Liberty Caucus in the NH House. There is a Republican Caucus. A Democratic Caucus. A House Republican Alliance. And also a Natural Rights Council. There are some additional groups like a business group and so on.

Join us in New Hampshire. Vote with your feet. Get elected. Write a bill. Get it passed. Make a difference.

ONH Solidarity Statement


1. Occupy New Hampshire welcomes individuals who wish to work in tandem with the message of the national and international movement. We recognize that there are those who may oppose some issues, and ask only that they stand aside in such cases.

These issues include, but are not limited to:

*Union/worker rights

*Environmental protection/regulation

*Minority/women/immigrant rights

*Opposition to Citizen's United/corporate money in politics

*Marriage equality

*Acknowledgment of income inequality and the need for tax reform (taxing the wealthiest)

*Need for Healthcare not based on a profit motive

2. Occupy New Hampshire is committed to nonviolence. The presence of firearms is not welcome at Occupy New Hampshire meetings, actions, and events.

Since the free staters and libertarians controlled most the Occupy New Hampshire social media sites, what actually happened is a group of occupiers broke away from Occupy New Hampshire and started their own thing. Open carry of guns was 1 of the main reasons they broke away. I say, let them. The more groups the merrier. When you do politics as much as some of us do it, it is fun for there to be silly distractions. It makes politics more entertaining.

It was kinda annoy for those liberty folks to refuse to hide their guns. Then again, I guess they just didn't want to get killed or raped. Occupiers have been known to rape each other.
