PAWLING, N.Y. (AP) — A New York state senator has spurred controversy online by asking in a tweet if the Boston Marathon bombing suspect arrested Friday should be tortured.

Second-term Republican Sen. Greg Ball of the Hudson Valley tweeted just after authorities in Boston captured Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-KHAR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) Friday evening.

Ball's tweet calls the suspect "scum bag No. 2" and asks who wouldn't use torture on him to save more lives.

Many tweets responding to Ball were critical of his remarks.

Ball issued a statement Saturday defending his position on torture without mentioning his tweet. He says he is not shy in saying torture is justified in the war against terror if it can save lives.

Unreal what elected officials can state publicly with no repercussions.

Once again I hate my state...

I don't even believe this guy is guilty. Government did this one. They needed a demon so they created one...

All hail the Fuhrer.

Greg Ball is a piece of neo-con garbage who tells people what they want to hear. ('I'll lower your taxes and increase education spending for your kids') During election season he had lame propaganda signs that said "JOBS! Ball gettin' the job done!" despite the fact Putnam, Westchester, and Dutchess counties have had no noticeable economic improvement. (My 50k salary makes me one of the finest products to come out of my town from class of 2003 despite being ranked only 82/325 of seniors that passed that year.)

I wonder if he's a playboy or just gay because he's in his 30s and never got close to getting married. I've heard though he's a different girl different night sort of guy and he did have a stalking scandal.

Great man, what if someone tortured him?

Edit: Yes, I've voted for Democrats each time, including a party switcher, this guy ran. Having the 'R' in upstate NY makes it impossible to lose. Real election day in in September.
