The National Republican Senatorial Committee, apparently in agreement, appends the Paul statement to one from committee communications director Brian Walsh, who attacks (not by name) Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.):

As a side note, I would point out the irony – which seems to have been lost in some of the news coverage -- that the same party seeking to manufacture this issue today, is in fact the same political party which led the filibuster against the Civil Rights Act in 1964. In fact, the sitting President pro tempore of the Senate, elected to this leadership position by his current fellow Senate Democrats, was one of the leaders of this filibuster.

keep reminding liberals of that ...

How can then Sen. Obama caucus with someone who filibustered the Civil Rights Act? Maddow needs to get on the case, it's an outrage

The democratic party is also the party of the KKK. It was created by the democratic party to scare black people away from the polls.
Byrd being a member.

I don't think his opposition to the CRA was based on property rights.

Good to see the NRSC coming to Rand's defense. That's a good sign.

I see it as a bad sign. They should come out against the Civil Rights Act, and apologize for ever having supported it, and applaud Byrd for his courage in standing up against it.

I seriously would love to see the repeal of the Civil Rights Act put in the GOP platform. We need to make it enough of a mainstream position that when people express it, they don't get labeled "fringe" for it. And supporting the Civil Rights Act is so obviously wrong that it's really indefensible to take that position anyway. It's practically a no brainer.

i was very young when the bill passed...

when i was 14 i read Hubert Humphrey's book "the cause is mankind"
and was impressed by it. robert byrd right now is the ranking Democrat
in the senate. he is easily twenty years older than mitch mcconnell the
minority leader. yes... times have changed. yes... barry goldwater may
have voted against the bill initially, but byrd definately tried as young
senator to filibuster the same. senator byrd now sits yoda-like above
this all as trey grayson looks more luke skywalker for what he don't
know about d.c and the back~story. we do know that barack obama
knew how sweet was his victory, for we have not had the son of a true
foreigner get to the whitehouse since the time of chester a. arthur for
like our humble potus, the guy who had been garfield's veep was the
son of a british citizen. admittedly chester a. arthur came from the same
village on the merrie emerald isle that many of my ancestors lived in, (lucky
moi) ...and there may be a connection to the man by blood or marriage!!!

over the years teddy kennedy by slow affiable irish good charm and wit
softened byrd's rough edges... at the end, the two men were close friends
and long ago senator ted had forgiven robert byrd for ejecting him out of
the whip position in the early 1970s. robert byrd has seen a raft of young
faces retire or die recently, and yes... had gurley L. martin won the primary
on the 18th, he'd have been significantly YOUNGER than robert byrd. to be
nice about this, any change in a hardened segregationist over tyme says how
our own civil war has truely healed, even if like jim bunning we can EASILY
find these earl butz moments in pure auld video clips! lets let YODA be, as
we get back to the REAL issues of the senate race. lets hope the mass media
LISTENs to DOCTOR RAND PAUL this SUNDAY when he is on MEET THE PRESS!

didnt the Civil Rights Act get debated a few years ago in the mainstream? maybe not seriously debated, but i think there was a lot of discussion about whether we still needed it or not... maybe it was a vote about whether to extend it or something? i cant remember. we might be able to find some clips or quotes from leading, Karl Rove, George Bush, Mitch McConnell, Orrin Hatch type figures saying that they don't think we need it anymore... maybe? maybe, on 2nd thought, its best to let this fade away into obscurity. im glad this is happening now instead of months from now.

Good to see the NRSC coming to Rand's defense. That's a good sign.

Conway is worse than Rand Paul... i think they see that for sure. Also, with Democrats turning out to be stronger than anticipated this cycle, I think we can expect a lot more since Rand has consistently polled well against the Dems here
