Now is the time for all real Republicans to bolt

House Republicans who don’t support the Fiscal Cliff bill, which now seems likely to pass the House, should form a third party in the House and switch to it immediately before the bill hits the floor. The first benefit would be great: Boehner would lose his speakership and McConnell would lose a lot of political clout.

They should just caucus together as the Tea Party folk or whatever and identify themselves as the conservative base. Then, they just oust Boehner as Speaker and move right along. There's at least 5 noobs coming in that are fairly solid liberty republicans so this would be a nice addition to the conservative ranks.

This! It's politics 101. Our conservative position will actually strengthen with the next Congress and Boehner will be weaker. If you want to help, get more liberty candidates in Congress. If we get another 10-15 in 2014 we got some considerable clout.

I don't agree with a complete split from the GOP, but absolutely agree with a split from its leadership. Form a distinct faction whose allegiance must be earned on each and every issue, and who will protect each other from arm twisting and committee shenanigans coming from leadership.

Sounds good on the surface but it's extremely risky, politically. There needs to be massive grassroots support for any real third party to keep seats in congress. I do fully support the sentiment, however.

If this occurred then the Dems would control the House and Senate, Pelosi would be speaker. And if other elected officials, say at the state level, would follow suit the Republicans (and the new party guys) would lose control of many state legislatures.

The better solution is to caucus together as a conservative group, oust Boehner and McConnell, and bring new leadership to the party.

No they wouldn't. Remember you have to get an outright majority to be speaker, not a mere plurality. If we had a parliamentary style system (which the House kind of is) having a strengthened Tea Party caucus would give us more leverage with the establishment. If they needed us to elect a speaker, we force them towards our platform or we vote for a Dem speaker. Simple as that.

Plus in many state legislatures Republicans own supermajorities. Even in a swing state like Ohio we have 60 of 99 House seats. A Tea Party caucus for example would have significant clout.
