Wyckoff Cop Investigating Break-In Goes To Wrong House, Shoots, Kills Dog

WYCKOFF, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A police officer investigating a report of a burglary in New Jersey went to the wrong address and shot and killed a dog that he claimed lunged at him.

Wyckoff police received a report of a possible break-in at 621 Lawlins Road on Wednesday.

Police Chief Benjamin Fox said that Officer Kyle Ferreira instead went to 622 Lawlins by mistake.

No one answered at the front door, so the patrolman went around the back, entered through an unlocked gate and spotted an open window, Fox told CBS2’s Andrea Grymes.

Thinking he found a possible point of entry, the officer drew his revolver and approached, Fox said.

Then a growling German shepherd lunged out the window, bit the officer’s foot and latched onto his boot, Fox said.

The officer fired his gun four times, striking the dog twice, Fox said.

The 5-year-old dog, named Otto, later died.

“The whole situation is very sad and very unfortunate,” Fox said.

“We loved him so, so much,” Zana Vukobratovic, Otto’s owner, said, crying. “He was my best friend,” said Igor Vukobratovic.

“They always call him ‘Gentleman’ because he was such a nice dog.”

The family, who was not home at the time of the incident, said they left the window open for Otto to come in and out of their gated yard. They admit their pet was a guard dog, but don’t believe he would’ve bitten the officer.

“What can you tell me? ‘Oh, we killed your dog. Sorry, we went to the wrong house,'” said Igor Vukobratovic. “They couldn’t do anything else besides shooting my dog?”

Neighbors said Otto was not violent. “If the town cannot get this straight on a simple call to the house, how can they handle an emergency when something really occurs,” said neighbor Chip Tamer.

Police say they are continuing to investigate and talk to neighbors who may have seen what happened.

Fox said the officer is physically OK but distraught about what happened. He is still on active duty.

That's so horrible.

I never imagined such indignity before today.

Just another in an endless litany of "unfortunate incidents", "tragic missteps", "sad occurrences" and whatever other phony platitudes our overseers heap upon any story of us Mundanes or our animals being wiped out by self same enforcers.

Scenario doesn't seem very likely. In that scenario the cop would have emptied his gun, hitting his own leg at least 3 times.

The cop that killed the dog also killed an unarmed suspect by running him over....

Update: Burglary happened days earlier.

WYCKOFF — Dispatchers told the Wyckoff police officer who shot a dog April 29 that the burglary he was investigating had taken place "quite a while in the past."Bergen County on Monday released recordings of dispatches made before and after Officer Kyle Ferreira shot Otto, a German shepherd belonging to the Vukobratovic family.
Dispatchers told Ferreira the burglary took place at 621 Lawlins Road. An officer can be heard at about 0:20 responding quietly, "Received, 622 Lawlins Road."

Chief: Cop who shot dog had right to defend himself
The dispatcher is then asked how long ago the burglary took place.
"According to the desk, quite a while in the past. Like, days."
Another officer tells dispatch he's also going to Lawlins Road. At about 1:02 in the recording, Ferreira tells dispatch he's at Lawlins Road. The shooting follows.
"I have shots fired. I had a dog come after me."
At about 3:39 in the recording, a Wyckoff police officer reports in from the correct house, 621 Lawlins Road, confirming that a window screen at the house had pry marks on it and an outside light bulb had been smashed.
Chief Benjamin Fox did not immediately return a request for comment. He previously said Ferreira, who drew his weapon when he saw an open window in the back of the Vukobratovic home, had a right to defend himself against a possible burglar.

Wyckoff cop who shot dog was involved in 2010 suspect's death, report says
Fox said Ferreira knocked at the Vukobratovic's door before entering the backyard. When he saw the window, which the family left open to allow Otto into and out of the house, Ferreira thought a possible burglar might still be at the house.
"He has every right to be prepared to defend himself," Fox said. "Is a burglary suspect going to come out of that window?"
Instead, Otto came out of the window, biting Ferreira's boot, Fox said. Ferreira fired four times, striking the dog twice.
The Wyckoff Police Department on Monday denied a records request for incident report on the shooting and the burglary citing an ongoing investigation into the shooting. The department also denied a request for any witness statements, saying they were part of an internal affairs investigation.
