Quick Kurt Ad Pays Tribute to "Fast Paul" (Wellstone) Ad from 1990

BLOOMINGTON, MN—The Kurt Bills for US Senate campaign has taken a page from Paul Wellstone's 1990 campaign and released its first advertisement named "Quick Kurt."

The ad mirror's Wellstone's, featuring the candidate running hard and working fast to overcome his opponent's fundraising advantage.

Wellstone was the anti-establishment candidate in 1990, as Bills is today. In 2012 the Democrat is the candidate of big money, special interests, and Washington power. The Republican is the little guy who is a teacher riding around the state in a school bus.

"We don't have Amy Klobuchar's big money, her Washington and Wall Street allies, or big labor on our side. But we have the right candidate with the right message, and we will work hard and fast to get our message out," said Mike Osskopp, campaign manager for the Bills campaign.

"This campaign we are the underdog, just as Wellstone was in 1990. Amy Klobuchar is the candidate of Washington lobbyists and Wall Street. And just like Wellstone in 1990, the underdog is going to win," Osskopp concluded.

I spruced up the title a little bit, hope that is OK FSP-Rebel. I like the ad, it's a smart and clever way to get his name in the news and draw some attention to his candidacy, and also remind people that the race is winnable (just like Wellstone won). Here is some more media coverage of the ad:

Kurt Bills defends ad parallels, says he and Wellstone have much in common

The campaign of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Kurt Bills says he's sorry if the family of the late U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone takes offense at a Bills' campaign ad that mimics the ad run by Wellstone in 1990.

But Bills, who's running against incumbent Sen. Amy Klobuchar, says he feels that comparisons between him and Wellstone are apt.

“Just as Paul Wellstone stood by his principles and came home to explain them to his constituents, I will too. Klobuchar, on the other hand, is afraid to campaign as she governs. She claims to be a moderate in Minnesota, but votes with Obama 95% of the time. That’s neither principled nor courageous,” Bills said in a statement.

Kurt Bills Draws Parallels to Wellstone’s Bid

BLOOMINGTON, MN—Public school teacher and Republican endorsed candidate for US Senate in Minnesota Kurt Bills continues to draw parallels between his bid for Senate and Paul Wellstone’s in 1990.

Bills’ advertisement, “Quick Kurt,” has received criticism from liberals for mirroring Wellstone’s “Fast Paul” ad from the 1990 race, but the Bills campaign stands by its contention that Bills and Wellstone have much in common as candidates, and that the Bills ad is an homage to Wellstone’s campaign.

Wellstone’s son David has taken offense at the ad, saying that it “is completely disrespectful of my dad’s memory.”

The Bills campaign differs with David Wellstone, and is sorry that he has taken offense.

“Paul Wellstone and I share a passion for wrestling, and we sat together at a wrestling match a few years ago. We disagreed on most things, but I enjoyed his company immensely, and respected his dedication to his principles,” said Kurt Bills. “I know a lot of conservatives who disliked his policies but who couldn’t help but respect the fact that he had the courage of his convictions.”

The parallels to the 1990 Senate race and the 2012 race are unmistakable. By mid-September 1990, Wellstone had raised less than $200,000. Boschwitz had raised nearly $4.8 million. A Star Tribune poll released in September 1990 showed Boschwitz ahead of Wellstone 55 percent to 40 percent, and nobody thought Wellstone had a prayer of winning.

Wellstone and Bills also share prairie populism. Both come from working class backgrounds, were teachers, wrestlers, and they share a deep skepticism of the establishment. Bills speaks up for the little guy, as did Wellstone. And as Wellstone stood by his principles despite withering criticism from his opponents portraying him as far outside the mainstream, Bills stands up to those who portray his conservativism as too libertarian. They even share a mode of transportation: the school bus.

“Liberals may not like the comparison between the Bills campaign and the Wellstone 1990 race, but the comparison is unmistakable,” said Mike Osskopp, Bills’ campaign manager.

“Amy Klobuchar is the candidate of Washington and Wall Street. The big money has anointed her because she has stood by them, voting for the bailouts and stimulus,” said Osskopp.

“Just as Paul Wellstone stood by his principles and came home to explain them to his constituents, I will too. Klobuchar, on the other hand, is afraid to campaign as she governs. She claims to be a moderate in Minnesota, but votes with Obama 95% of the time. That’s neither principled nor courageous,” Bills concluded.
