So I went to see the Evil Dead today, which was hilarious (as long as you can laugh at yourself for wasting 8 bucks), and saw an interesting preview for a new movie called: The Purge. The premise is this, for 12 hours every year the Government suspends all emergency services (police, hospitals, etc on account of financial strain aka lack of taxes) and the citizenry are left to take care of themselves (can you be given something you already have?). Despite the black and white fallacious framing (that the Government isn't the source of these services and certainly isn't the only thing capable of providing them) I am interested to see how this flick plays out.

I expect that absolute chaos and horror will ensue, and that the protagonist will be on the verge of a terrible death at the hands of the lawless mob right when the twelve hours are up and, thanks be to god, services will be reinstated and government will save the day. Most people will walk away mildly entertained and more secure in their belief, should they hold it and it seems most or many do, that without the leviathan absolute violent chaos (notice I didn't say anarchy) would ensue.

I am a student of propaganda, and movies like these are among the worst sorts that is the covert kind.

Relax, self, it is just a movie. There to entertain, not to influence reinforce nor engender attitudes of a particular kind... errr hmmmm.

Anyways, happy day all.

So was the remake better than the original? From what I have read, it doesn't go in the direction of the 2nd and 3rd movie as far as being comical.

Some seriously twisted shit there.

Just from the trailer,, I don't know where to begin,,,:(

Why not just spread out the 12 hours over the whole year. Thats about 2 minutes a day.

just saw the preview for this, the propaganda in this movie is disgusting...

It's just a movie, who cares? It looks interesting, so I'll watch it.

With that being said, I think that, REALISTICALLY, chaos WOULD ensue if something like that were to happen. Hell, look at what happens after every sports championship or after every natural disaster. In groups, people often compromise their morals.

I'm not terrified of government services being ended. If people in the inner cities wanted to clean up and get rid of gang violence, this would get it done.

Wow, that looks interesting. Don't know if it will deliver over the course of the running time, but the concept is great!

Well yeah, if you take a society that's used to government control of everything and give it total freedom suddenly, chaos is going to ensue. Doesn't mean that liberty/anarchy is inherently bad.

Kinda like if you tie everyone to chairs their whole life, then suddenly let them all try to stand and walk on their own, most of them are going to faceplant. Doesn't mean people shouldn't be allowed to walk around.

I wonder how many people watching that movie will realize that? Or will they think "Boy, I'm sure glad the government is here to keep us all tied down".

Well, call me crazy, but I don't think anarchism could ever last peacefully for an extended period of time.

Depends on what you mean by that. Some would call what we have right now anarchy.

What level of aggression (initiation of force upon peaceful people) do you think is necessary for "peace"?

And has the leviathan proven itself able of handling such... chaos?

Well that theory has never been tested. I do not believe that anarchy can or ever will exist,,

It is clear from history that Authoritarianism is not peaceful.. Ever.

Looks like a good idea for a movie though. I hope they don't just focus on the one family. Would be interesting to see what cops, military etc would do during those 12 hours. Since they have a leg up on everyone else as far as equipment and experience goes, I bet they would be the ones you would really want to avoid. The ones with families would probably stay home to protect them though.

Yeah, they wouldn't get passed the pooches. :)

Pooches are good.

Of course, I'm reminded that we'll be removing the zero tolerance policy at our schools here during the coming year. Don't know why I'm reminded of that. Just am. Ought to be a hoot.

I don't see it as for 12 hours the government suspends services, really for 12 hours the government gives up its monopoly on crime and violence and invites everyone to join in.
