While New Hampshire and New Jersey both have "New" in their names, the states couldn't be further apart politically. New Hampshire has just about the least restrictive self-defense laws and lowest taxes in the nation. Then there is New Jersey!

And property taxes are higher in NJ.
I was surprised when I first learned that. People complain about high property taxes in NH, especially in southeastern NH. But parts of NJ are much higher.

7 of the 10 counties in America with the highest property taxes are in N.J., study says (the other 3 counties are in the NYC area)

Tax free would be nice, if only it was true. New Jersey and Connecticut are the only states with higher property taxes from what I've seen. I know the rate varies throughout NH, but the same is true for many other states. NH is good on some things. But all states suck one way or another.

Agreed. While there are communities in NH without property taxes, property taxes tend to be above average in NH. It is worth noting that over half the land in NH is in Current Use status, meaning that it is taxed at a very low rate. That information isn't helpful for anything less than middle class folks when it comes to owning land. However, if you are upper middle class, you can really get a ton of land and pay almost no taxes on it, other than on your house and the 1 acre nearest it. For the lower middle class, well, there is no general sales tax, so that helps them :) Plus, much of the Current Use status land is at least partially open to the public to enjoy for free.

As for the various other taxes in NH, like high corporate taxes on large corporations, those certainly do exist. The Tax Free thing is a fun, catchy way to describe the various factors that are being compared on the image between the two states. It isn't meant to be taken as there are no taxes at all in NH :) This is a popular meme for the FSP :)
