Americorps is a major affiliate of ACORN. AmeriCorps has long been ripe for abuse...
The report noted that, "AmeriCorps members of AHC raised funds for ACORN, performed voter registration activities, and gave partisan speeches. In one instance, an AmeriCorps member was directed by ACORN staff to assist the [Clinton] White House in preparing a press conference in support of legislation."
Aware of this kind of abuse, earlier this year Sen. David Vitter (R-Louisiana) tried to block ACORN from using AmeriCorps funding to promote its own political objectives, but ACORN allies, including Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Maryland), helped to defeat Vitter's legislation.

ACORN bilks AmeriCorps – In 1996, the Inspector General of the AmeriCorps program, Luise Jordan, stripped a $1 million grant from the ACORN Housing Corporation (AHC). When applying, AHC had denied any connections to ACORN, since the grant was not intended for political advocacy organizations. Evidence later uncovered by the Inspector General found that not only was AHC created by ACORN, engaged in numerous transactions with one another, and sharing staff and office space -- but it utilized the AmeriCorps grant to increase ACORN membership, a violation of federal guidelines. AHC also utilized its government-funded loan counseling program to steer low-income families toward ACORN memberships. Jordan found that AHC had distributed leaflets stating that low income, first-time homebuyers were required to join ACORN, at an annual cost of $60, in order to receive the government-subsidized counseling.

The Inspectors General for the AmeriCorps program (national service program which just received $5.7 billion) received a phone call Wednesday evening, June 10, 2009, from the Whitehouse council’s office who told him Obama would fire him if he did not resign in one hour. He did not resign. The following day the President Obama did inform Congress of the firing but without reason.
A new law passed in 2008 said that if the President wants to fire Inspectors General he must give Congress 30 days notice and cause before firing. A co-sponsor of the law was Senator Barack Obama. This law was to protect the Inspectors General from political retribution.
We now know that the Inspectors General did a rather controversial investigation of a friend and political supporter of the President, a man named Kevin Johnson, a former NBA star who is now the mayor of Sacramento, California. Before he was Mayor Kevin Johnson had a non-profit group for children called Saint HOPE Academy. There were allegations that Johnson had misused thousands and thousands of dollars in federal AmeriCorps grants. The Inspectors General whose name is Gerald Walpin, investigated, and found out the allegations was true. Gerald Walpin’s investigation appears to have made some higher up people uneasy.

The Inspector General, Gerald Walpin, discovers Kevin Johnson’s fraudulent use of your tax money. Kevin Johnson and his organization is fined and told they can no longer receive any grant money from the federal government ever again.
Obama and the chain of command for Corporation of National and Community Services, Jackie Norris, Alan Solomont, disagree with the Inspector General's recommendations that Kevin Johnson can no longer receive government money.
The next move is made by Obama when he threatens to fire the Inspector General if he refuses to resign.
