Ted Cruz picked up key support Friday when former South Carolina governor and current congressman Mark Sanford endorsed Cruz for president.
According to the Washington Times, Sanford was planning on staying out of the race until the attacks on Cruz escalated, “Mr. Sanford, who had remained out of the race, said he got involved because he was upset at the attacks on Mr. Cruz, whom both Mr. Rubio and Donald Trump have accused of lying during the South Carolina fight.”
“It just struck me that it’s gotten out of bounds,” Sanford said.
Sanford called Cruz the best defender of the Constitution left in the race.
Although Sanford had remained neutral before Friday, he once appeared to be leaning toward Rand Paul. He introduced Paul on his first visit to South Carolina as a presidential candidate back in April.
Sanford joins fellow South Carolina Congressman Jeff Duncan in endorsing Ted Cruz. Trey Gowdy has endorsed Marco Rubio. Mick Mulvaney endorsed Rand Paul before he dropped out the race, but has not endorsed anyone else.
Sanford is considered one of the most libertarian-leaning members of the House along with Congressmen Justin Amash and Thomas Massie, both of whom endorsed Sen. Paul for president early in the primaries.
