What do you call a law intended to silence one group of people and not another?
Censorship is what I call it; and thank God a filibuster prevented the Senate from passing it.
Still, the Democrats, including Amy Klobuchar, voted to censor speech through intimidation by passage of the so-called “Disclose Act.”
It sounds innocuous enough: force every organization and non-profit to disclose all its donors who give above a certain amount of money. It sounds like a good old-fashioned “sunshine” law-- but it isn’t.
It is, in fact, aimed squarely at intimidating contributors to conservative organizations, while letting liberals skate by unscathed. Unions, for instance, collect their massive caches of cash as “dues,” and wouldn’t have to reveal a thing.
Conservative groups, however, have no such immunity. Tom Mazzie of Moveon.org bragged of their strategy of "going for the jugular.” Mazzie sent a warning letter to conservatives that would be just the first step, "alerting donors who might be considering giving to right-wing groups to a variety of potential dangers, including legal trouble, public exposure and watchdog groups digging through their lives."
That’s what the “Disclose Act” is about. And that is what Amy Klobuchar voted for yesterday.
Even John McCain, no friend of the 1st Amendment when it comes to money in politics, called it “a clever attempt at political gamesmanship,” not real reform. And Scott Brown called it “a cynical ploy masquerading as reform.”
This election is about preserving our rights and freedoms. I talk about bringing ECON101 to Washington, and I mean it. The first principle of ECON101 is that only through being free can we also be prosperous.
The “Disclose Act” itself is just another side of crony capitalism, where the government gets to decide who succeeds and who doesn’t. It helps ensure that only friends of the establishment have a voice in how things are run.
Join me in fighting for ECON101, and for freedom itself. It is time to replace Amy Klobuchar with a true voice for freedom in Washington.
