Senate race: Kurt Bills driven by desire to reduce debt, deficits

On a sultry July day, Senate candidate Kurt Bills stepped around a corner onto Wabasha's Main Street and spotted -- absolutely no one.
The street was deserted. The Republican contender had just spent nearly two hours on his campaign's old school bus to meet voters one on one.
Some candidates would have blown a fuse and cursed staff members for wasting their precious time.
Not Bills. The first-term state legislator and Rosemount High School economics teacher is an even-tempered guy with a positive outlook. Nothing seems to get him down, a useful trait for a long-shot challenger against Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a popular incumbent with a big campaign bank account and a well-tuned political operation.
"Let's go find some people," Bills said to his campaign manager, Mike Osskopp, and a couple of reporters who were tagging along.
