"Teachers for Taj" a Front Group for Union Officials
Kerry Bentivolio For Congress | Press Release
Sept 13, 2012
A group of teachers formed by Kerry Bentivolio’s liberal opponent, Syed Taj, to attack Kerry’s candidacy consists of just three retired teachers—and all three are union officials, Kerry’s campaign has discovered.
Jim Pearson, a founding member quoted in a Taj press release, was President of the West Oakland County Education Association.
As of this release, only two other teachers were named members of the group to be found on its Facebook page: Carolyn Norris, President of the Livonia Education Association; and Jack Schneider, a Communications Committee Liaison for the Michigan Education Association and a 2011 board member of the Michigan Democratic Party’s “Justice Caucus.”
“What’s remarkable is that these union officials conceal their agenda—protecting the interests of the unions—by shamelessly casting themselves as representatives of the students,” Kerry Bentivolio said in a statement.
“For years I was forced to pay dues to the teachers union, money that was then spent electing Democrats. I had no choice but to support causes I disagree with, or leave my job, which is the same non-choice all public school teachers get.
“This entire character assassination campaign has been waged against me for exactly one reason: because I support the workers’ right to refrain from joining a union if they so choose. I challenge the union’s monopoly over the workforce.
“But make no mistake: voters understand that it is the parents who represent their children’s interests, not union officials, and they will not be fooled by this phony group of special interest lobbyists.”
