GRAND RAPIDS -- Michigan's default congressional candidate, reindeer rancher and former teacher Kerry Bentivolio had a coming-out party with fellow Republicans this weekend, making a series of appearances at the party's fall nominating convention.

As has been the case with his candidacy from the outset, however, Bentivolio -- who snagged his nomination when former Rep. Thaddeus McCotter's campaign disintegrated amid a petition signature scandal -- remained an enigmatic and somewhat reticent politician, appearing only briefly onstage and largely shunning attention from reporters and even supporters.

In a brief interview outside the convention hall, Bentivolio cited several factors in his reluctance to speak to the news media before the primary.

At least this is a semi-fair article by Freep but if they'd bother to have sent someone to the convention, they'd note that Kerry did say a few words on stage regarding defeating Obama. What else is a new comer supposed to say in his small introductory time slot in between the party bigwigs rallying spiels? As far as shunning his supporters, that has never been the case. He would campaign along side us at every event and even when some of us weren't around he was canvassing on his own. I'm not sure what event in Farmington they're talking about on Friday but there was that big party at the Amway Grande in GR that had ~400 people packed into one of the sports bars there and Kerry was there from start to finish talking to people. Also, the Freep could stand to update their photos of him. All of the recent articles they write contain photos from the primary win.

Another thing I forgot to mention about the convention was that our state C4L guy (formerly Ron's state chair) had about 2000 printouts of the RNC's rules changes and we attempted to place them on every chair in the gallery with the other candidate info/signs but the party wasn't having it. So, people stood alongside the other candidates' pushers at the entrances and handed out all of these info sheets so the other delegates and alternates could get a sneak peak at what's in store.

I got 100 or so NDAA nullification sheets out to people within the state Republican Party as well as got a couple dozen signatures for an e-mail action list. The vote is in a couple weeks for that in the Michigan House of Reps. I also put those sheets on about fifty seats in the alternate delegate section of the 11th. All in all, a good and encouraging event
