Just Donated to Kerry Bentivolio, will you?

FYI:

168.145 Representative in congress; vacancy, special election.

Sec. 145.

The governor shall call a special election as provided in section 633 of this act, in any congressional district of the state when the right of office of a person elected representative in congress shall cease before the commencement of the term of service for which he shall have been elected, or whenever a vacancy shall occur in the office of representative in congress after the term of service has begun for which such representative was elected.

Sec. 633.

The governor shall call a special election in any congressional district of the state when the right of office of a person elected representative in congress shall cease before the commencement of the term of service for which he shall have been elected, or whenever a vacancy shall occur in the office of representative in congress after the term of service has begun for which such representative was elected; or the governor shall direct that such vacancy shall be filled at the next general election to be held at least 30 days after such vacancy shall occur.

As far as I understand, he could call a special for August - there's a 30 days deadline - but he won't because primary ballots are already out. Too complicated logistically. So there will a special election in November, simultaneously with the GE, with the winner going right away to DC to serve for the rest of this congress and then staying for the next one.

McCotter was just bored to death in Congress. That's why he ran for president and he had that signatures debacle. He stopped caring.
Actually, I talked to a staffer from the MI AG's office about a month ago and he said that someone(s) is likely to get into some trouble over the sig fiasco.

The only thing, it might permit the governor to appoint someone for the remainder of the term who could run as an 'incumbant', depending on their rules. I hope you are right though.

Based on the early media reports, the Governor would have to call a special election to fill the seat for the rest of the term, and that would hardly be cost effective. That person would still have to run a write-in campaign in the general election, assuming they weren't the winner of the primary.

If he does call for a special election, that will mean Bentivolio needs more money.

The logical thing to do would be to just send the winner directly to Washington after the general.
