I have always disliked this guy. I have friends that seem to love him for some reason. I can't figure out why. I usually just avoid the conversation.

The sheriff's office "has never used race and will never use race in its law-enforcement decisions", said his lawyer Tim Casey, who promised to appeal the decision.

He and others who sued Mr Arpaio alleged he ordered some immigration patrols based on citizens' complaints about brown-skinned people congregating or speaking Spanish.

Mr Arpaio's office has also been sued by the US justice department, which accused his office of multiple civil liberties violations, including punishing Hispanic jail inmates for speaking Spanish.

Mr Arpaio shot to prominence by forcing prisoners to wear pink underwear. In 2012, he suggested President Barack Obama's birth certificate was a forgery after an investigation by his "cold case posse".

There is no secret that Arpaio singles out hispanics in his "policing", conversely it is also no secret that 99% of illegal workers in his county are likely hispanic.

you couldn't have said a more ignorant statement. i'm going to wait for you to say you're just joking before i label you a fool.

There is no doubt about the fact that he never misses an opportunity to put his face in front of a camera. The article mentions that he "shot to prominence by forcing prisoners to wear pink underwear." Let's put this in perspective. We have a president and Himmler at the DOJ that endorse and defend drone striking people suspected of crimes. Bureaucrats that forget you are supposed to be angry at the corruption that whistle-blowers expose, not obsessed with throwing the book at the whistle-blowers willing to speak out against the corruption they discover. Facts like these considered, people would still rather brand this Sheriff Joe as evil for requiring jailed inmates to wear pink boxers and black and white striped jail attire? Oh the humanity. FFS.

P.S. He's my county sheriff. Yes he is a blowhard, I usually get annoyed with his actions. However, this is ridiculous.

Kind of one of the hells that go with the job.

If people in bright ? shirts were robbing banks it would make sense to talk to a few people wearing ? shirts.

Hey! Aren't those guys in ? shirts profiling banks?

They like him because he is a Republican that stands up to 'the man.' The philosophical content of his belief system is only secondary. Also, they tend to have a lesser knowledge of the US Constitution that strictly forbids many of the actions he takes. Problem is if you point out the specific and detailed Constitutional violations then you are attacking their hero who (unlike so many elected Republicans) actually has the guts to smack down the Obamanation. About the only course we can take is to stand back and let him self-implode on his own unconstitutional petard, to mix a metaphor or two.

I have no respect for any law enforcement that profiles people based on color of skin or for the language they speak. If someone obviously breaks a law, go after them. If they are peacefully going about their business, leave them alone.

Joe Arpaio agrees with you.

Right.

Personally, I think the guy is as corrupt as they come and about as bright as a bag of rocks.

However, the 'profiling' thing is overplayed.

I don't think so.

Where I live profiling is on-going. I have a friend who is a mixture of Welsh and Jew; he has long black hair and is constantly stopped for non-existent car problems. The police think he is Mexican and so they stop him.

My relatives in Arizona say it is 1000 times worse there.
