Jeb Bush's Campaign On Life Support After Rough Debate

BOULDER, Colo. — The biggest story from last night's debate wasn't Marco Rubio's strong performance (which it was), Ted Cruz stealing a moment (which he did), or the candidates and GOP audience attacking the media (which most definitely happened).

Rather, the most significant story from last night is that Jeb Bush's campaign now finds itself on life support, especially after Bush swung and missed when trying to hit Rubio over his Senate voting record. As one Republican operative told NBC's Peter Alexander, Bush had to demonstrate to his supporters and donors — after a rough last few weeks — that the former Florida governor could land a punch, particularly after telegraphing to the political world that it was coming. But Bush missed. Badly.

It was the equivalent of a teenager who, after telling the whole school that he was going to fight a classmate at lunchtime, ended up being the one taking the licking. We've covered politics long enough to know that a presidential candidate can rise from the dead (John McCain), withstand a bad debate performance (Barack Obama), and shine when it counts rather than months before the first votes are cast (John Kerry). But Jeb Bush is in trouble right now. Big trouble.

Bush has to do something to buy time: For Bush, last night's debate will either be the moment that ended his presidential campaign, or the point when his campaign hit rock bottom (because he can't go any lower, right?). But to buy time, Team Bush has to do SOMETHING to calm the campaign's most ardent supporters -- whether it's new campaign staff or Bush admitting to strategic mistakes. The bad news for the campaign was last night. The silver lining: Every president and nominee has faced some near-death experience.

What a crazy election cycle. I'm glad he is struggling, but I don't think many would have expected the race to be the way it currently is. I wonder if he will drop out even before Iowa. I hope he does. I bet he stays in at least until next debate since it is so close, but after that it could be the end for him.

So, is Rubio the chosen one now? I assume most of Jeb's big money will start going to Rubio

By "the campaign's most ardent supporters", they mean the big donors, because those are the only supporters he ever had.

I won't be surprised to see Bush, Christie, Kasich, and Huckabee all drop before the December debate. Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if Fiorina didn't make it to the December debate either. I can't see any of those I listed willing to move down to the kiddie debate. They'd rather just drop out at that point.

Other than Bush dropping because he was a front runner and still tanking in the polls and his campaign is struggling financially and will continue that slide, most will stay in until the money dries up. Heck, Kasich is polling at 10% in NH. He's not going to drop out. Almost all will be gone after NH night or SC the latest.

I mean most of the top 10 will stay in. The other set are toast. Just a matter of time.

Jeb has to "be on life support" so he can miraculously come back and win. This has become predictable.

Agree, plus the more that stay in the race, the better chance Rand has of winning Iowa and even New Hampshire with as low as 25% of the vote.

If you think that Jeb Bush is on his way out of the race then you don't know very much about how the Bush syndicate operates.

Isnt there a possibility that he gets out before an actual vote happens to save face over being trounced when it counts?

At least that cartel/syndicate gave away the game plan . . .

Hah - Jeb released a 112 page slideshow presentation of his path to victory - I guess to show it hasn't been all fantasy football.

A 112-page internal document provided to U.S. News includes more dirt on Marco Rubio, Iowa vote goals and a January advertising plan.
Bush's team distributed a 45-page PowerPoint presentation to select reporters, summarizing an optimistic view of the race,
touting the Republican candidate's cash and organization, and assuring supporters that early polls are rarely indicative of ultimate success.
The full presentation, obtained exclusively by U.S. News, spans 112 pages and includes a trove of new details, including Bush's internal polling,
his vote goal in Iowa and his advertising plan for January.

Slide/Page 19 starts the title of Marco is a Risky Bet
I like
"(Marco's) Never been in charge of more than two dozen people"
and also of course
"Misuse of state party credit cards, taxpayer funds, and ties to scandal-tarred former Congressman David Rivera
takes away line of attack on Hillary Clinton"

Alot there Jeb !
Fighting with Marco over donors in Florida (and Texas) are ya' ?

What chance does he have? He has little if any public support. Explain to me how a candidate in almost last place can win?

Funny thing is . . . Jeb has apparently decided not to go down so easy, and wants to at least drag down Rubio with him.

Wasn't McCain on life support going into the 2008 NH primary with like only a bus and a couple dozen staff? How'd that work out?
