I'll give up my butter before I give up my gun. :p

I'm always concerned when he uses the term "guns and butter". Unfortunately a lot of people don't know or remember the context for that in the first place. I see peoples eyes glaze over when he uses that term sometimes.

It's a sad unfortunate necessity how things have to be dumbed down to get a message across.

It's akin to having your cake and eating it too. In the 60's it was referred to Gun's and Butter. Guns refers to the War in Vietnam (today in the Middle East) and Butter refers to the government assistance programs like social security, welfare, education, etc.

We couldn't afford them both then and can't afford either today.
