Iowa GOP to announce “special guest” at Ames debate

Iowa GOP Chairman Matt Strawn will hold a media availability following the meeting of the Ames Rotary at 1pm [CT] today to announce an special guest attending the Iowa GOP/Fox News Debate on Thursday, August 11. Chairman Strawn will also give an overview of the week’s events including Thursday’s debate and Saturday’s Straw Poll. Interested parties should email [email protected].

Yeah, probably will be. My understanding is that this is the first year they have allowed write-ins, too. It's all a big Hollywood production for Perry.

Disgusting.

Bilderberg has some real power. They are catapulting this guy. Mark Sanford speaks out about the meeting, and he gets outted for being a perv. Scary stuff.

Brace yourself. Be prepared to deal with Perry getting 40% of the debate time to himself, Romney will get 30%, Bachmann 20%, and the final 10% split between Pawlenty and Santorum. They will treat Ron like a decoration.

This is retarded, if he wants to debate, he better announce his intentions to RUN. It is as if he is some sort of exception...

Is Perry in the debate???? WTF?

Well...COME TO THINK OF IT, they let Bachmann into the last debate...Oh, shit.

For now I think this is good.

Ron Paul beating Bachmann at Ames would be a blow to her campaign. But she'd still be in it. Rick Perry getting in the race would take her down. And it would make Perry her nemesis, not Paul.

Then it will be a three-way race between Perry, Romney, and Paul. Perry and Romney will beat each other up for a few months. And then, a week before Ames, Perry's marital infidelities will become front page news. And the race will be a classic battle between a thoroughbred establishment Republican and the ultimate tea party candidate, in an election when all the energy will be for the tea party candidate.

It's pissing me off the more I think about it...

Anything to divert the nations attention... I think Paul will be well prepared for it though, assuming he gets time to talk.

Watch Perry pull a Bachmann and announce he's running during the debate.

Have no clue how this will affect us.

Criteria for participation in debate:

Candidates must satisfy the following by 4 p.m. CDT on Tuesday, August 9, 2011

1. Registered with the Federal Elections Commission as a presidential exploratory committee or presidential campaign.
2. Meet all U.S. Constitutional requirements.
3. Garnered at least an average of one percent in five national polls based on most recent polling leading up to the registration day.

Seems like Perry will form an exploratory committee by tomorrow or the debate sponsors will change their own rules for him.

Well, on the bright side, a lot of people that follow elections saw the pandering he did just last weekend to evangelicals. I heard a soundbite of Perry praying on the radio, and it really sounded like a Saturday Night Live skit.

Also, we have that little Ron Paul loyalty factoid on our side.

AND, he would just take votes away from Pawlenty and Bachmann, imo.

why don't they just get past the 'debate' title and call it what it's become, a "Pageant of the GOP Darlings".

Ugh.

Mr. Wead better be preparing our guy to receive every curve ball thrown at him and turn them into home runs.

I think it'll backfire... he comes off completely phony... it's another Trump stunt that will chip away at Bachmann... it will hurt us in the beginning, but we will only keep rising throughout all of this.

I have total confidence in Wead.

Perry or Huckabee, who is planning at being at Ames for Fox.

Perry 'is announcing' per various headlines (the stories aren't quite that definite) I think he saw Ron surging, and figured capping Ron doing well in the straw poll by announcing himself might not do. He wants to head off the surge. I wonder if he's already too late? I mean, I actually assume he'll get a huge bump until people figure out who he is, and that should last through the straw poll.

Not sure Ron will be the one most hurt, though. But I hope Ron is looking out for nasty questions from Fox. Along the lines of the spin they've been pushing of what he got in 2008 in votes BEFORE his predictions came true, and their favorite pretence that he is merely king of the straw polls. Obviously, Reagan won on the 3rd try, and Ron's poll numbers show him surging.

I believe it is a requirement of the debate that participants have a campaign or exploratory committee, isn't it?

If it is indeed another candidate, the debate will have to give more time to that person than what it would have if that person wasn't there. But in terms of the straw poll, Ron Paul is likely to benefit the most as his followers are least likely to change their vote. Although I'm not sure how the media will play that down. "Ron Paul only won because X announced and drew votes away from Y. X only had one day to gather votes and did so well but couldn't have been expected to beat Ron Paul. But if you combine the votes for X and Y, they're the clear leaders!"
