I'm hearing predictions of both. Which do you expect in the near future?

Long term? Always inflation, until we wise up and go to a 100% gold dollar.

We are going to experience deflation in Assets, ie Property and Shares

and

Inflation in the cost of living, ie food, fuel, etc...

Short term: deflation
long term: inflation

@Michael Varin:

"In 1913 a dollar was worth a dollar, like in 1796. Whats a dollar worth these days? Two cents. TWO FREAKING CENTS!"

I'll go with Rons pick

inflationary depression if they keep pumping money and lower rates to zero, or deflation if they leave the markets alone. It matters not though the same result, pain.

Deflation

DEFLATION

WAY to much debt out there - no way massive hyperinflation could even fix it.

The current situation in the price of Gold is telling us deflation. The Gold market recognizes the difference between CREDIT inflation and MONETARY inflation. We have had CREDIT inflation, and now people must liquidate assets to deal with the panics and margin calls in the hedge funds. That is why the price of Gold is currently dropping like Lead.

Massive hyperinflation first (as in right freaking NOW),
Then, somewhere down the road appetite for debt will shrivel up at any interest rate due to risk aversion, which will lead to deflation.

It's a real bloodbath in the markets right now.
I'm standing aside until the carnage subsides, holding energy and metals shares, and ADDING gold bullion at these prices.

Deflation first, Like a big railroad spike sneaking up on your ass inflation next, swinging like a hammer that drives it home.

When Ben Bernake said he would fly over in helicopters and throw money out the doors, he was kidding.....but just barely. They have so many ways to flood new money into the system that inflation, and probably hyper inflation, is the only way this is going to go.

No deflation with the Fed in charge. They can spread it around out of an airplane if needed.
