So, I have become a convert to and big fan of an investment strategy invented by Harry Browne and a couple of his friends called the Permanent Portfolio. It seeks to give people a way to protect their wealth. It takes an agnostic view on the future. The combination of those two elements means that it must protect wealth regardless of what comes our way -- prosperity, inflation, recession, or even depression.
One of the first foundations to understand the philosophy behind the Permanent Portfolio is to read the list of 16 Golden Rules of Investing that Harry Browne penned. He wrote these after a long and successful career in the investment business. When I first heard him go through them on his radio show, I was both startled and thrilled at how wise they were. I would recommend starting there. Here is a link to those shows, where you can hear him explaining the principles in his own voice, which I think is a wonderful experience.
