Problem is that they exist outside the visible light spectrum our eyes can detect.

Robert Hurt might just have the coolest job in the galaxy. He's a visualization scientist with NASA, helping to interpret research data from space telescopes and NASA missions into photography. In short, he helps reveal the hidden universe that exists beyond the realm of human vision. In his PIX 2015 talk, he shares his insight on how his images are created, his take on so-called 'False Color' in astrophotography and what kinds of things we can hope to discover when the unseen world becomes visible.

The photos they come up with nowadays are at least more believable than the ones they made for the "moon landing"

That too can be barely visible to the naked eye and require photography help to be able to see them. http://www.bootsandabackpack.com/the-northern-lights-photos-vs-reality/

When They Do Appear, They Won’t (Always) Look Like The Photos

All aurora photographers — myself included — are guilty of taking photos that don’t quite reflect reality. Aside from being able to make the sky appear green when the naked eye can only see white, long exposure photos mean a lot more movement is captured in one shot than you would see otherwise.
