I use a program called URL Helper. It sniffs out the most difficult embedded videos and has a specific program section just for downloading FLVs. Their website is: http://www.urlhelper.com/

I use download helper plugin for mozilla firefox. Lets u download youtube vids in flv format. I've also been able to download vids off websites like CNN and other formats such as ms-wmx...

In case you can't find what you're looking for on the web, Vanderbilt has a Television News Archive that goes back to 1968. They charge a fee for the service, but if you want high quality footage it's the way to go.
