How do people feel about Rand?

HE ISN'T THE DEMIGOD RON PAUL!!! THEREFORE HE MUST SUCK!!!!!!!!!! NO ONE BUT PAUL OR ELSE THE REPTILIANS WILL INVADE US!!! RON PAUL IS OUR ONLY HOPE AND MUST BE WORSHIPED!!!

Seriously, though, he's a pretty cool guy. Of course, he doesn't have the same vibe as his father, but I think he'd make a very good President one day.

I don't know. He's a bit of an enigma. I'm not sure how much of a libertarian he is. He sometimes speaks like one, but sometimes he sounds just like any other politician. I think he tries to appeal to a wide audience, but it's difficult to determine what he really thinks and believes. He doesn't always communicate a principled political view - rather, he tries to be very pragmatic. Whether or not he is really principled, or really pragmatic, I can't say.

I want to think he's trying to be a *stealth* libertarian. Time will tell.

A conversation I had this weekend with an older woman (who was a stranger to me)

Woman: I like Ron Paul, but I just can't get past that foreign policy.
Me: Oh? You don't like a strong foreign policy?
Woman: Well, I do, but I don't think that's what he's offering
Me (picking up campaign literature on 'Restore America Plan' & 'Strong.Secure.Respected'): I hope you would take a look at this. There's a lot off bad information out there, but actually Ron Paul is offering a strong & wise foreign policy that our founders and even George Bush advised. His budget plan cuts $1 Trillion without cutting one cent from seniors, veterans, or national defense.
Woman (refusing to take the literature from my hand): I've heard & read all I need to know about Ron Paul, and his foreign policy is dangerous. But, you know, I wouldn't mind seeing his son, Rand Paul, run; I really do like him.
Me (confused): But Rand Paul has the same foreign policy as Ron Paul.?...
Woman: Yeah, but he's a little more polished, and presents himself better.
Me: Oh. So you don't have a problem with Ron Paul's foreign policy, you just have a problem with his appearance? (dissapointed) That's terrible.
Woman: Now, I didn't mean it that way...
Me: I don't know how else to take it...(shrugging), I wish you'd reconsider, because it sounds like you're letting the liberal media influence your pick. I would hate for that to happen.
Woman: Well, I'm not going to vote for Ron Paul. walks away

I've had several people express the same view about Rand. (Fox watchers I'm assuming)

It is truly a fascinating dilemma.

[A] On the one hand, there are people like me--we are only involved in the current political cycle because Ron Paul is a once-in-a-lifetime candidate and Ron Paul's message+delivery resonates deeply with us. Ron Paul is the only politician who can give speeches and keep my mind focused and my dilute my internal skepticism of politicians.

On the other hand, there are people who love Ron Paul's message but are critical of the fact that Ron Paul seems to put off more "moderate" people and that there is a negative stigma attached to Ron Paul. These people gravitate to Rand Paul because Rand certainly comes off more neutral and mainstream while still holding a very large ideological common ground with Ron.

Both [A] and need to be united to win a general election for either Rand or Ron.

Because of him Paul won`t run third party. I think regarding this issue there might be some friction between father`n son should it come to 3d party run.

I found it interesting that when Paul was asked recently about a third party run and reporter suggested it might hurt Rand`s future inside the GOP, Paul said that such blackmail won`t work and that he won`t give in.

As Xenophage noted, I do think Rand is trying to be pragmatical though but it`s a bit foggy because you can`t get a real sense of what he really stands for.

While interviewed by CNN he said he would have acted differently than his father when it came to allowing bar owners to pick their own customers, though he did explain why Paul`s position made sense. He also took differend stand than his father by voting for Iran sanctions.

So yes, I do think he`s trying to appeal to a broader base as most in the GOP like the economical message but without the foreign policy part. Rand was dodgy several times when asked about the foreign policy.
However, one should also consider that compromise is often necessary if you want to get things done. It`s a tricky one though.

I get that all the time from Neocons... I like Rand better! Maybe because he's up Hannitys ass? I don't know...

Rand Paul knows how to bring people over to our side without hitting them on the head with a book of "Man, Economy and State". He understands what needs to be done to gradually convince regular Republicans. He's the future. In 2017, he will be president.

I think Rand Paul is right on most issues. I disagree with him on putting sanctions on Iran, but overall he is a good ally to the movement, just like Mike Lee and Jim Demint are on some issues.

I don't know enough about him and him being in Congress for ONE year isn't enough for me to trust him. Once he has a solid record and has proven he won't be corrupted from the pressures of being in DC for a few years then we'll talk. But yeah if he's like this 4 years from now I'll be a huge supporter.

i think he is better than most politicians at the moment. i disagree with rand paul on 90% of the things... i also disagree with about 90% of what ron paul says. i like it that way. if you agree with the candidate 100%, something may be off or wrong. its impossible to have the "perfect" candidate.

even if ron doesnt win 2012... he pretty much set the stage for rand to win in 2016. we all know if ron doesnt win 2012, GOP has an obligate aerobe's chance in a vaccumm. so without ron, obama will get re-elected. rand will be there in 2016 to pick up where his dad left off.

i hope ron paul will be around when rand paul gets sworn in in 2016/17 ^^;;.

cmon, i think we all agree that rand is better than romney, santorum, or gingrich. we can say that much.. right? so if it was a race between rand, romney, santorum, and gingrich... you'd vote for rand straight up.
