How can the people in South American countries repair political damage?

I got into an argument with my siblings over the weekend about illegal immigration - they said the reason most are here is because the situation in their home countries in South America is $H!T - then I say "Well, it's the people's job to repair the damage", then they say "Well, they've tried doing it, but protests don't work and they just get held down by dictators."

They believe only an outside force can repair the damage in South American countries. I know the history of US toppling SA dictators, and some voters voting in socialism (Venezuela), but by and large, what else can citizens of those countries do to take power back instead of just protests?

It's a damn good question considering our non-stop intervention there. I don't know the answer.

Our problem is keeping them out of our country so they don't destroy it.


First they will have to develop a real liberty culture so when they launch a revolution they don't just create another tyranny.

Wrong. The US gov has it's paw prints all over their politics and governments. It will only become exclusively 'their' problem if we mind our own business.

We most certainly should stop interfering but they had their problems before we were a factor and they would have them if we stopped this minute.
