"A newly declassified document shows that J. Edgar Hoover, the longtime director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, had a plan to suspend habeas corpus and imprison some 12,000 Americans he suspected of disloyalty."

Well, they did it to a hundred thousand Americans of Japanese ancestry and assorted Americans of German and Italian ancestry during World War II, and the Supreme Court had upheld it, so in the historical context, he wasn't going all nuts and secret police state and weird. He was just supporting a dreadfully wrong policy.
