Help me investigate a famous singer/guitarist

Who is he?

Known facts:

- Was lead vocals/guitar for a billboard top 100 rock band of all time.
- Band started in the 1960's and (might) still play to this day.
- Currently lives in Michigan, in or near Detroit.
- Has worked as an EMT or ambulance crew recently, may still work as an EMT
- Was present at Kent state shootings
- Active protestor of the Vietnam war
- Self identified as a hippy

I'm doing this purely because I've been in online conversation with this person, and those are the only facts he's given me to his identity. I am actually trying to get him to support Rand Paul.

That was one of my guesses, but Wikipedia says he lives in California. Also he wasn't the member of a "Band"

My first two guesses would be a former member of either ? And The Mysterians or Frijid Pink. A less likely guess would be a former member of Rare Earth. All 3 of those bands would seem to fit the profile of MI bands that started in the 1960's, cracked the Billboard top 100, could arguably be described as hippies, have lead vocalists and guitar players that are still alive as far as I know, and probably never made enough money off of royalties to make some other career necessary at a later point in life.

I'm not sure that playing the role of some creepy stalker and trying to invade his privacy is going to help convince him to support Randal.
Seems to me that if he wanted you to know who he was; he would have just told you.

Perhaps it's just a fun round of on line "Trivial Pursuit".
