Greg Brannon to Challenge Establishment Senator Richard Burr

In a press release today, Dr. Greg Brannon launched his campaign to replace incumbent Sen. Richard Burr in North Carolina.

Brannon, who is a Cary, North Carolina OBGYN, campaigned in 2014 to replace then Democrat senator Kay Hagan, but lost in the primary to Sen. Thom Tillis. In the primary, he was considered the conservative alternative to the establishment candidate, Tillis, having received endorsements from Sen. Rand Paul, Sen. Mike Lee, Rep. Thomas Massie, and RedState’s Erick Erickson, among others.

In 2016, Brannon will fight the establishment again. Here are some highlights from the press release:

“We’re facing the greatest threat to liberty in our lifetime” said Brannon. “Now is not the time for go-along-to-get-along Republicans. Now is the time for courage. It’s a time to stand up and fight for our values before it’s too late.”
Brannon insisted that “if we don’t stand up and fight to defend the principles that made this country great, we will watch as the American Dream vanishes for future generations. I care deeply about the America we will leave behind for my seven children – and the 9,000 babies I’ve been blessed to deliver.”

Brannon added that Burr “likes to call himself a conservative - but you and I know politicians love to use words like the constitution or conservative during election season to distract us from the truth. And the truth is, Richard Burr is part of the House of Cards Washington Cartel.

Brannon is right about Sen. Burr, who scores a paltry 45% on CR’s Liberty Score®. During his tenure in Congress, Burr voted to expand federal involvement in education, ardently opposed defunding Obamacare, and supported big government interests including subsidies and bailouts. Just last week, one of Senator Burr's senior aides caused a stir when she implied, via Tweet, that Ted Cruz gave away national security secrets during the debate.

That is an awkward sentence. Could be read as Tillis getting those endorsements.

Republican Dr. Greg Brannon To Primary Burr In NC
by Dan Riehl - 21 Dec 2015

Republican Dr. Greg Brannon will challenge GOP incumbent Senator Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC).
...
Brannon released the statement below regarding his plans to challenge Burr, who is seen by activists as part of the much maligned Republican establishment in Washington.

Today, Dr. Greg Brannon, a Cary OBGYN and constitutional leader in North Carolina, launched his campaign to replace Senator Richard Burr.

Vowing to “never stop fighting for the American Dream” because he “cares deeply about the kind of country” that his children will inherit, Dr. Greg Brannon threw down the gauntlet to incumbent Senator Richard Burr today.

“We’re facing the greatest threat to liberty in our lifetime” said Brannon. ”Now is not the time for go-along-to-get-along Republicans. Now is the time for courage. It’s a time to stand up and fight for our values before it’s too late,” said Brannon.

Brannon insisted that “if we don’t stand up and fight to defend the principles that made this country great, we will watch as the American Dream vanishes for future generations. I care deeply about the America we will leave behind for my seven children – and the 9,000 babies I’ve been blessed to deliver.”

Citing, among other things, Burr’s Washingtonian impulses to raise the debt ceiling nine times, to call Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)’s stand against Obama Care a dumb idea, to fund President Obama’s executive amnesty – Brannon made it clear that his opponent “is a Washington insider who is backed by special interest SuperPACs and Karl Rove.”

Brannon added that Burr “likes to call himself a conservative – but you and I know politicians love to use words like the constitution or conservative during election season to distract us from the truth. And the truth is, Richard Burr is part of the House of Cards Washington Cartel.”

And the fight for the American Dream is one Brannon expects to win. “Though it may seem dark right now” he said, “let me tell you why I’m very optimistic. Everywhere I go, I see the American people are rising up.”

And they are rising up against Republicans just like Richard Burr.

Dr. Greg Brannon is a Cary pro-life Obstetrician and conservative leader in North Carolina. Dr. Brannon is the anti-establishment candidate running in opposition to the Big Government, big spending status quo in both political parties.

Opportunities to speak with the candidate are available for members of the media upon request. Please contact (919) 634-6239 or email [email protected] with questions

Awesome, here is to hoping Brannon can pull this off. Would be a tremendous pickup. I think Greg Brannon would be even better than Rand, and that's not a knock on Rand just saying that's how committed Greg seems to be, he seems like the real deal. If the conservative and libertarian base rally behind him could be a nice upset. Not sure how hard the Breitbart community was pulling formhim last go around, but I know Glenn Beck and The Blaze was very supportive.

Burr doesn't appear to be in any kind of serious trouble, but if Brannon feels that he has what it takes, compared to his previous run, anyway, then go for it. But I'm not holding my breath.

That was what everyone said about Brat challenging Cantor.

There is an anti-establishment wave going on right now. Timing couldn't be better.

I hope he has more money next time. He did very little campaigning, at least in Western NC. He also had some kind of lawsuit pending against him; I think it was trumped up by Karl Rove who supported Tillis...Burr is definitely one of the establishment Republicans...I rarely agree with him on anything.

Hopefully all of the nonsense that came out of his mouth after his loss won't come back to hurt him. Also hopefully he does everything right with his campaign; going after an incumbent is very difficult.

Not just after but during...I remember hearing him on the Glenn Beck program and he was saying stuff like we are going to do this, blah blah...in the meantime he was not campaigning....most people never heard of him and probably still haven't heard of him. I wasn't really impressed with him but I would vote for him over Burr, whom I absolutely do not like, but what's the choice? NC does not seem to produce stellar politicians..I've been hered 10 years and I am not impressed, but I do like my Congressman, Meadows, and the governor seems ok. Buat when it comes to Senators, just very weak in character.

That's fabulous !!! I want to see Mr. Obozo rubber stamp go down. I'm in and will help in any way I can.

I like that he isn't giving up and is seemingly trying to ride the Trump wave into power. Best of luck to him, I will be donating!

He had plenty of money last time, something like $1.5m. Half of it was basically stolen by Saber Communications with nothing to show for it. I hope Greg vets his team better this time around. I never received a single mailer for Brannon last election.

I get his strategy of waiting until late to declare but it sure doesn't leave much time to get his name back into the minds of voters before the early NC primary.

I also hope Greg has worked on his speech delivery. He was very unpolished and spoke waaaay too fast and disjointed last election.

All it means is Brannon has more name recognition than Brat did starting off.

Well, I think the more relevant difference is that Brannon ran a poor campaign and Brat ran an excellent one. If Brannon learned from the mistakes of his first campaign and is planning on running a Brat style campaign this time, then that's great and maybe he has a chance. If he's going to rehash his last run but this time against an incumbent Senator, the results are likely to be even worse than his first attempt.

And Burr hardly seems worried:

But Paul Shumaker, Burr's consultant, hardly seemed ruffled by the news. "The only surprise is that with his fraud judgment still hanging over his head that he'd get back in the political ring," Shumaker said, referring to a pending health fraud suit that Brannon is currently involved in. Even though Brannon picked up a sizable portion of the 2014 primary vote, Shumaker said the environment in 2016 is different. "He's starting late in the game, he's raised no money ... and going up against an incumbent who has spent over 20 years building the GOP party in NC, and who is very well-known and extremely well-funded. It's a whole different set circumstances."

- Those factors will clash, though, with a longer-term environmental shift that has seen outsider candidates rise in the presidential race this year and three flawed challengers drag GOP Senate incumbents under 50 percent of their primary votes last year.

They're not exactly wrong.
