Not only CAN it be done, it IS being done. By other countries.
Maybe after the US completely de-stabilizes Ukraine there will be time to work on some of this. Or, maybe not.

Green hydrogen facility opens at Berlin airport, with first refueling of fuel cell vehicle
29 May 2014 renewableenergyfocus.com

The first fuel cell electric vehicle has been refueled at the ‘Green Hydrogen Hub’ (H2BER) of the Total multi-energy fueling station at the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) under construction in Germany, using hydrogen produced onsite via electrolysis using wind and solar energy.

In addition to refueling fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), the H2BER project also anticipates operation of a combined heat and power (CHP) plant with regeneratively produced hydrogen, and its supply into the public gas network. It thus offers an opportunity to conduct research into the 'energy transition'n as a single system...

Producing hydrogen using wind and solar

H2BER’s operating principle is based on applying hydrogen as an energy source produced using wind power and solar energy. Initially the electricity required will be provided by a nearby wind park. Hydrogen production at high wind speeds will also be tested and observed by scientists in a dedicated research campus.

Total is operating two hydrogen fueling pumps at the site, one for cars and one for buses, as well as offering natural gas (CNG) and LPG fueling, and even charging points for battery electric vehicles. The company is also integrating a rooftop solar installation, developed by its photovoltaic subsidiary SunPower....

Hydrogen storage and dispensing

McPhy is also operating a solid-state hydrogen storage system with a capacity of 100 kg, which is aligned to fluctuating hydrogen production, to complement the onsite compressed gaseous storage.

Linde is responsible for the overall hydrogen handling process, from production in the electrolyser to dispensing from the pumps. This includes storing gaseous hydrogen in a 45 bar high-level tank, compression to 900 bar (13 000 psi), storage in high-pressure tanks, and refueling of cars and buses. The company will also supply industrial clients with a proportion of the hydrogen produced onsite.

So, a bunch of Germans spent what looks like a couple dozen million dollars filling up a gas tank.

We've known they love to do simple things in fantastically complicated and expensive ways ever since it handily cost them the war in 1944-45.

What's the point of this thread?

Quite obviously you don't know the first fracking thing about how Germany is half way to energy independence. While the US was bombing and invading and wiretapping its way around the world the Germans have been working on independence, a concept that you may have heard of. (Or, maybe not).

What's the point of any thread here, Einstein? Holy crap I'm completely convinced now after seeing the bullsh*t spewed over the last few months towards hydrogen that somehow the very word releases a gas in some peoples minds that immediately subtracts about 70 IQ points.

Thanks for showing more of the wonderful spirit of comraderie that this place is so well known for. I've only ignored one person here since I joined so welcome to 2nd place. Lots of unfriendly people. Downright foul. NFO

Edit: Who wants to put up with this bullsh*t to reach a few hundred people? Keep up with the kind words and watch the view count continue to drop. I really don't know why there are as many views as there are. BTW: Are you related to that witch AngelaTC? Peas in a pod.

Wow. I have no idea what the Germans are doing. But your attitude, really? Is this some adventure free from government involvement?

Dude, you come here posting how the great state of Germany is forcing people to pay orders of magnitude more for their energy than anyone else, collectively lowering the entire country's standard of living, and expect people to play nice?

You're here shilling for fascist/corporatist energy schemes. The reason this doesn't exist in America is because nobody has pointed guns at everyone and made it happen.... because it's not cost effective.

You're never going to get anywhere with the energy argument until you can show your technology is more efficient than what the market is currently doing. And then you won't need to come to internet fora and try to convince anyone, because it will just happen. It won't happen because the state is threatening to imprison people who do it a different way. It'll happen because people want to save money, because that's the way this works, because this is the way it has always worked since the beginning of time.

Every single solar panel at that site put together produces a fraction of the power of a coal fired power plant, at several times the expense and footprint. It's not viable.

This is libertarian economics 101 and frankly it surprises me that it needs to be said every single week here.
