Greece will vaccinate its entire population of 12 million against the H1N1 swine flu pandemic which has swept around the world in weeks, killing hundreds of people, the country's health minister said on Friday.

The Mediterranean country, which receives about 15 million tourists every year, has confirmed more than 700 swine flu cases and no deaths, but world health experts say the true number of cases globally is far higher as only a few patients get tested.

"We decided that the entire population, all citizens and residents, without any exception, will be vaccinated against the flu," Health Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos said after a ministerial meeting.

Greece has already earmarked 40 million euros for vaccines and has placed orders with Novartis, Glaxo and Sanofi for 8 million vaccine doses, to be received gradually by January.

Vaccine experts say people will likely need two doses of vaccine to be protected from H1N1 swine flu, so Greece would need a total of 24 million doses to vaccinate its entire population. Other countries are taking similar steps.

"Greece will order 16 million more doses from the same companies in the future," a health ministry official who declined to be named told Reuters.

"We are only waiting for the European Union's approval to start vaccinating everyone."

The European Medicines Agency has begun reviewing pandemic flu vaccines under development, aiming to get them approved before the flu season starts, sometime in September.

The health ministry official said children, the elderly and ailing would be the first to be vaccinated.

About 800 people have died worldwide since the outbreak of the flu in April.

Interesting. I wouldn't doubt the EU would force them to override that restriction if it got "bad". But at least its there and is something you could directly acknowledge (unlike the abused vagueness of the US Constitution) as a reason against receiving the vaccine.

I dont think the EU can override the constitution, but i wouldnt be surprised if they found ways around it

Or will they act more sensibly and allow those who wish to take the vaccine to do so, and let those who don't, free to do as they wish ?

If they speak honestly about this issue, many will listen, but if they try to use force in this situation, many will fight.

Although I can see why you say what you do...you may be underestimating the people that are fed up and just waiting for the moment that the " powers " that be cross the line.

Every time somebody says that they're pissed off at somebody, and I know they will do nothing, I counter with this line: "no, you won't do anything, you'll just do what you're told like a good little soldier." I hope you're right, sir.

How do y'all think a mandatory vaccination program would be implemented if established in the US? Would it be more of an unspoken, unenforced mandate that would be easy to flee from, or would armed National Guard troops break down front doors and set up roadblocks to track down and immunize all of us "scofflaws"?

It's a shame Obama doesn't apply the same standard to his own doctor, who has expressed strong doubts about the Obamacare plan. Really, he's just going to justify authoritarianism for the sake of justifying authoritarianism.

Why do people care if you get the vaccination or not?

If you have the vaccination, what does it matter if I get it or not? I thought the vaccination was to stop you from getting the disease, and if you have the vaccination, you don't need to worry about me giving it to you. Thus, you have no argument for me getting the vaccination, as regardless of what I choose, you chose to take the vaccination so "you're safe."

Forced vaccinations make no sense.
