The other day we learned that Rand will be visiting Iowa in May, in what some consider the planting of seeds for the 2016 Republican primary.

Well, meet Rand's possible opponent, Gov. of NJ and Fox News favorite, Chris Christie.

"Christie's first day in the Middle East will be busy. He plans to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and visit Jerusalem's Western Wall."

if he starts running now, by then he could be a size 30...heck, so could i.

He will be exposed. But if the electorate is anything like they are now, he still has a great chance of winning the nomination. No doubt that he will be the "front-runner" on day one.

If Rand does decide to run, it won't be easy.

Chris "Crispy Kreme" Christie will undoubtedly be the Romney next time. However, most of the so-called conservative base that favors Santorum/Gingrich/Bachmann/Perry/Cain have a highly favorable outlook on Rand as opposed to Ron. Not to mention, talk hosts like Hannity/Levin/Beck don't have a bone to pick with Rand like they do with Ron (not saying they won't find one). Imo, we'll have a more level playing field in '16 than now though we still would have to tackle the party insiders and their voting dirty tricks.

Still, it won't be an easy run because Fox will be behind Christie, unless someone else emerges.

That was my first thought upon reading this news blurb. +rep

gov. Chris Christie's 2016 Run Starts Monday... we explore how far he will get

Another Giulani type candidate who's message doesn't resonate outside the northeast corridor. Rubio is the one to watch in 2016 not Christie. In fact, the hispanic Rubio is the biggest threat to Rand Paul's ascendancy by far.

To address Christie's weight problem on a serious note:

He weighs 400lbs at least. His body will be far worse off 4 years from now and even now i doubt his body could handle the rigors of a presidential campaign. If he has any intelligent doctors around him that are willing to be honest with him, he won't run unless he drops 200lbs and becomes at least moderately physically fit.

I love Rand, I just want to say that I hope nobody assumes we will get fair treatment next go round. TPTB know what Rand is up to.

Oh hell, he'll just have a gastric by-pass. Bing, bang, boom... he will be skinny. Then he will be the poster boy for obese people to run out and have one! You know how Americans like instant gratification!

This. There's no chance that Rand will be treated well. The media will turn on him just like they turned on Ron.

The media was never really in favor of Ron. They just treated him okay after 2008 because they didn't see him as a threat.

Rand is actually well liked by people like Hannity. Although I agree with peoples analysis of Rubio, I still think that the GOP will veer so far right within the coming years, that Rand will be there...waiting.

At the end of the day, whomever Fox loves, the GOP loves.

Exactly. But you also have to keep in mind that some of the so-called "frontrunners" for 2016 are up for re-election in the next few years. There's a growing chance that if Cory Booker runs, Christie may lose next year in New Jersey. Even if he survives, and Romney loses in November I don't think the GOP will go with another moderate. Same thing goes for the following (Scott Walker, Rick Scott, Nikki Haley, et al.) These are all well-liked Republican governors, some representing swing-states, so whomever survives the 2014 election will be given a push to run. So here's whom I fear in order of biggest threat to Rand:

1) Rick Santorum (if he runs again)
2) Marco Rubio
3) Allen West (you just know Beck is gonna push him)
4) Chris Christie
5) Nikki Haley

Ron would be in a better position with 'conservatives' if the media and right wing hosts couldn't drum up the unfavorables against him. Ron is Ron and is addicted to telling the unadulterated truth at all times. Rand, however, is stealthy in a pragmatic (yet mostly principled) way and imo, he's too smart for the neocons to turn the conservative base against him. Not to say that I don't think fake 'tea party' Rubio won't be used to peal support away from Rand, just that Rand being a fiscal hawk will stand him apart. God only knows exactly how the economy will measure up in ~4 years. I say this whilst not having given up on Ron by any means.
