If you don't trust the election officials to collect votes then it really doesn't matter how you conduct and election.
Oh, and if they were mailed instead of dropped in these boxes, they'd still be handled "in the dead of night" by the same election officials, and additionally handled by an unknown quantity of postal workers, both during the dead and "in the dead of night."
So, you now agree no-excuse mail-in ballots deposited in "drop boxes" are different than those mailed in . . . mailed in ballots having a post mark which helps to verify their legality.
