Gary Johnson: ‘Ron Paul and Myself’ Can ‘Grow the Base’

http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2011/02/gary-johnson-ron-paul-and-myself-can-grow-the-base.html

With the 2012 race taking some time to coalesce, former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson and his libertarian views may be crowded out by talk – stoked at a major conservative conference this week – that Rep. Ron Paul will make another bid for the presidency.

But on ABC’s “Top Line” today, Johnson told us that having both he and Paul, R-Texas, in the field is good for libertarian-leading Republicans.

“Republicans need to grow their base. So I think the fact that there are a couple people talking about the same thing -- arguably Ron Paul and myself -- I think that's a good thing,” said Johnson, R-N.M. “It needs to grow from where Ron Paul was in the last election cycle if these ideas are going to successful.”

As for his own potential candidacy, he said: “I wouldn't be sitting here right now if the response hasn't been really well over the last 14 months. I was kind of -- I live in Taos, N.M. I live there because the skiing is as good as any on the planet. And that's my passion, and I was kind of looking to get egged or tomatoed to send [me] back there.”

He should run for Senate and let Ron Paul have his term in office before he runs for president

Yeah I'm all for educational campaigns but GJ can get a lot done in the Senate. And since he's so open about drug legalization, gay marriage, abortion, open borders, etc.. he can bring in a lot of liberals who would normally go to the Democratic Party.

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but I think GJ should run for President. The more liberty-minded voices up on stage, the better. Hard to marginalize two GOP candidates that espouse essentially the same views. Being a governor carries a lot of weight, as very few Congressmen have ever successfully made the jump to being el presidente. His executive experience will come in handy with things like "vetoing 750 bills, cutting the size of government, etc." That said, I'm still voting for RP in the primary. However, it could setup GJ for a 2016 run. Exciting times.

Now that Rand Paul is a Senator, I honestly don't think Gary Johnson will ever be a viable candidate for us. When the average Republican thinks of him they'll think "Abortion, Drugs, Open borders." That's not a good image to have. Rand Paul presents his views in such a way that NeoCons, Conservatives, Paleo-Cons, Libertarians, etc.. in the GOP can support him. He'll definitely be the future leader of the liberty movement.

But Gary Johnson can be a Senator in New Mexico, a traditionally LIBERAL state that would agree with his views on drugs & borders. And he can expand the Republican Party and attract Liberals, Indies, & Hispanics.

Johnson needs to fall in line and run behind Paul until a later date. Either that or run for senate.

I am a pessimist and I do NOT see Ron Paul winning in 2012. However Ron Paul should run for 2012. And Gary Johnson should run as well.

The 2008 campaign was the first beam of light that fell on the GOP neocon influenced sheeple base and it did convert a few of them - even if it was a small minority. But that was because Dr. Paul was mocked, ignored and marginalized by the GOP. But it will be very tough to treat two primary candidates the same way they treated Ron Paul. It will be a massive shock to the teaocon "constitutionalists" to see their favorite candidate (Huckabee or Palin or Mittens) be accused of being a big government statist by not just one but two primary contenders. But I presume that neither GJ nor RP will get the nomination. It will go to another statist from the merry band of Bushtards and (Marco Rubio will be the VP nominee) and he/she WILL LOSE AGAINST Obama in the general. That should also doom Rubio's career - being part of a failed ticket is rarely good.

That should wake up enough teaocons (a good portion of whom will also become irrelevant by 2020) to see that the indies will never vote for a Bushtard and that the only way for the GOP to remain relevant is if they turn libertarian-esque (not just in rhetoric but in leadership and principles as well) and it should set up a good chance for Rand to win the presidential election in 2016 or 2020. Rand obviously being a "tea party" guy will be palatable to recovering and semi-recovering teaocons by then.

The only thing I am worried about is that 2016 (or 2020) is too much time for Obama and co. to fuck things up permanently in this country.

I agree.

Ron Paul is too old and shrill to be elected in America. Lots of people won't be able to get past it.

I'm on the side of those who believe Gary Johnson should not be dissuaded from running for President.

My humble suggestion would be a senate campaign - which if it does not look like he will win, he could drop out and become Ron's running mate. At the least the campaign would be educational.

Perhaps there's rules that disallow this from being possible...

I do think have multiple people advocating non-intervention will actual legitimize the position even more.
