Ex-school police officer charged after 2 K-9 deaths

CANTON, Ga. - Cherokee County authorities announced the arrest Wednesday of a former School District police officer in connection with the death of two police K-9s.

At an afternoon news conference, Chief Marshal Ron Hunton announced the arrest of former School Police Lt. Dan Peabody.

Peabody is being held at the Cherokee County Jail on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals and making false statements to officers.

The Aggravated Cruelty to Animal charge comes after Peabody left his partner, K-9 Inca, in his patrol car with no ventilation while the engine was off on June 10.

The false statement charge is in connection with the death of another police dog, Dale, a yellow lab who was retired from K-9 duty by Cherokee County Police in 2012.

Police turned the care of Dale over to Peabody after the dog’s retirement, after being assigned to Peabody from 2007 until 2012.

Peabody initially claimed Dale’s death was accidental due to Dale choking on a toy.

But at the news conference, Chief Hunton said the investigation showed evidence Dale was shot and killed by Peabody at his Paulding County home shortly after Dale retired from service.

Cherokee Marshal’s Office investigators along with investigators with the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the former home of Peabody on Monday, and animal remains believed to be those of a dog were recovered.

LOL! They are making a big deal on drudge about a k9 that died of heat exhaustion trying to rescue some migrants! Its really funny, because they are trying to evoke the same emotion that got people so riled up about that gorilla. The people-by attempting to cross the land, forced the k9 to go in a rescue them. The dog died of heatstroke (maybe no water?) thus the people killed the dog.

"Aggravated cruelty to an animal?" Wait a minute? Shouldn't that officer be charged with "killing a police officer"? He should face a felony conviction, serving a life term if convicted? What if a mundane kills a K9? Does the mundane face the same "aggravated cruelty" charges if the mundane shoots a k9?

I am for putting down all cop dogs.Those are not dogs.

I'd be more in favor of not allowing them to have them in the first place, esp since they are just used and abused (and used to abuse the peasantry).

I was reading earlier about some company in Kuwait that lost it's contract to use U.S. trained bomb sniffing dogs, so they just killed all the German Shepards and piled them up like trash. That's all these animals are to the police, contractors, and military, something to be used and then thrown away.

There might be some individual K9 handlers here and there who really do care about their K9s, but I doubt that most of them do. They're just another tool to be used in getting their stolen tax money. It makes me want to barf when I hear all these feel good stories on the news about service canines, knowing how they are really treated for the most part.

Especially when you consider that when THEY kill their own K9s through neglect or cruelty, it usually gets dumped with the others at the "animal shelter" , or goes in a dumpster or shallow grave.

It only gets a state funeral when a mundane kills one (and that's just a publicity thing for the cops, not so much to honor the K9).
