A couple of sites have picked this story up. It came out of Houston. I think the options they give would be fine. I am going to trust Dr. Paul to use it as he sees best.

DIGG IT.

HOUSTON — U.S. Rep. Ron Paul is considering using $4 million left over from his failed presidential campaign to start a for-profit publishing company that would reflect his Libertarian-leaning views.

The move could test the limits of federal campaign finance rules.

“I’ve never heard of anyone taking their campaign money and putting it into a for-profit corporation,” campaign finance-reform advocate Fred Wertheimer told the Houston Chronicle.

Former candidates have leeway in how they use leftover campaign money.

“There’s a provision that says you can use the funds for any lawful purpose, so long as it’s not personal use for the candidate,” said Bob Biersack, a spokesman for the Federal Election Commission.

Federal guidelines say the money can’t be used for things such as vacations, mortgage, rent or household items or to seed a for-profit corporation that benefits an individual or shareholder.

Paul, a Republican from Lake Jackson, about 50 miles south of Houston, has about $4 million in leftover campaign cash, said campaign spokesman Jesse Benton.

Among options being considered for the money, Benton said, are supporting like-minded candidates through Paul’s Liberty PAC; donating it to Paul’s FREE Foundation, which publishes his newsletter; trying to influence public policy through a new nonprofit group; or creating “something inventive and entrepreneurial” like a for-profit corporation to produce publications.

It’s not clear whether Paul would be able to form a for-profit corporation specifically designed for educational purposes.

Paul also has a potential gold mine in his mailing list, if he rents those names to interest groups or other campaigns.

Benton said the campaign has the names of 160,000 donors who have given an average of about $100 each. With people who signed up to receive campaign information, but have not donated money, the e-mail list grows to 400,000.

Presidential list are attractive because they include donors from across the country. Paul’s list also includes new participants into the presidential process, offering candidates a chance to expand their network to nontraditional donors.

On the market, the list of 160,000 donors would probably fetch about $135 per 1,000 names for each use, or about $21,600 a pop, estimated Kevin Shuvalov, a partner in Olsen & Shuvalov, an Austin firm that does fundraising and voter-contact mailings.

The Paul presidential campaign already has rented its list twice — once to his Texas congressional re-election committee, which raised $1.4 million, according to CQ Moneyline, a site that tracks FEC records; and once to incumbent Rep. Walter B. Jones, R-N.C., who serves with Paul on the Republican Liberty Caucus, a group of Libertarian-minded lawmakers.

It amuses me that an RP supporter would say, "I trust (insert whatever name here) to spend my money as he sees fit."

I do trust Dr. Paul to use the money or I would not have sent it. What should I do, demand a refund. I sent him money by choice not force. Big difference between that and a tax.

I like the like-minded-candidate idea. But $4 million doesn't go very far. That'd be the start of it, though, and people would keep adding to it, right? Something like Act Blue, but for candidates who actually follow the Constitution. :D

God I wish Benton would just STFU once in awhile (esp. when talking to Fox News, of all outlets). Now Im getting deluged with news articles from Yahoo that only say "Ron Paul considering using remaining $4million to start for-profit publishing company!!". No mention of the rest of the possibilities.... Worst spokesman in history.

He can take the money that I gave him and put it in his back pocket. If i was worried about it then I wouldn't have gave it.

The hope that I got was worth what I gave and more.

I don't have a problem with however Ron Paul decides to spend it, but...

My opinion is that he should give $1m each to the four best US House
candidates this election cycle (e.g. Murray Sabrin). Long term education
is important, but that's what think tanks are for. I want some small,
yet tangible, advances in liberty NOW!

Did you notice when this story came out? Just in time to bump the NV story off the google top news searches?

You seem to imply that we should naturally be more critical of how our money is spent.....as in with taxes.

However, the money we send Ron Paul isn't taken automatically out of our paychecks.....we give it to him because he is fighting for a cause we believe in. I sent him hundreds, and for all I care he can use them on hookers and boos (though i'd prefer it went to his campaign). He, unlike just about every other politician, is a good man, and I trust him with more than just my money, i'd trust him with my country.

He requested donations to fund his presidential campaign. I sent him money to fund his presidential campaign, not to spend "however he sees fit." It wouldn't bother me much if a few hundred thousand dollars were left, and they weren't sure what to do with it, so they put it toward some other project. However, we're talking about 1/4 of what we raised in that amazing 4th quarter. Most of that money should have been spent a long time ago, imho.

yep... exactly. The Nevada news is buried. If that were happening between Barack and Hillary we'd hear about it for days. It's harmful to the GOP and McCain so the general public will never hear about it.

Right, its a story put out in hopes of causing division among the "well organized" Paul supporters who are raping the faces of McCain's gestapo.
Psy-war anyone?
Will you fall for it?

I wish everyone would just stop whining about Ron Paul/defending Ron Paul about this stupid publishing company until someone actually says something of substance about it.

Good idea. Let's not give our opinion about it right now when Benton floats a trial balloon. Let's just sit quietly until it happens, and then start bitching. Great plan.

You know, if there was only one topic where I didn't have to see the stupid thing with the same people posting in EVERY TOPIC that would be great. You know what though? I've seen this same stupid topic 5 times with the same stupid arguments from the same whining people.

I like some of the people in the arguments, but I don't care about the crap. Whine in one topic, and then I'll stop griping.

Here's a novel idea. How about Benton just takes a page out of a real campaign spokesman's handbook and decline to answer questions like that? Or how about saying that they are still campaigning so there hasnt been any discussions about any surplus money? I dont get why this guy continues to give the media ammo to use. It's like he cant keep from putting his foot in his mouth once every couple weeks.

Fox to the rescue! Damaging news story on State of GOP disagreement on McCain at NV Convention, and continued support of Ron Paul, forces Fox to put out news story on Ron Paul's money. Anyone who believe this bull shit story, should go work for Fox! First, Ron Paul has never not been truthful with his supporters, second, Ron Paul wrote a book (FOR PROFIT) about his race for the White House. His book is coming out. FOX is doing the GOP dirty work. The bottom line is that the GOP needs to confront Ron Paul within their own base and they refuse to do it! Ron Paul's books has nothing to do with his funding for his campaign. And it is very funny to see the postings from the those who clearly want to generate distrust. Ron Paul has been re elected as a United States Congressman, I am sure he is following the rules. So, consider your efforts for the Ron Paul Republicans truly working, when FOX get's it's underpants twisted up for McCain's defense. The message and support for Ron Paul is deep, strong, and not relenting!

Go Ron Paul !!

Who cares what Ron Paul does with the money. Ron Paul is very intelligent and understands the political process better than any of us here. I believe he is holding on to those funds to use them in a last minute blitz for the nomination when McNazi keels over a few weeks before the convention...

I gave money to Ron Paul for him to use it how he wants to use it. That's what happens when you donate instead of buy.

Personally, I wish he would have spent it on more and better TV ads. But obviously his strategy was to keep some cash in reserve, and since he still has some I see no reason why he shouldn't put it to a good use like starting a publishing company.
